As technology evolves, the essence of health care remains unchanged: itโ€™s about people. Kai-Fu Lee accurately stated, "In the AI age, the most valuable skills are not technical, but human โ€“ empathy, creativity, and teamwork."

Dr. Maxo Luma echoed this sentiment during his World Family Doctor Day speech. Let's harness technology to strengthen doctor-patient relationships, not diminish them.

As health care professionals, we must cultivate qualities such as active listening and emotional intelligenceโ€”because, in the end, itโ€™s our human touch that truly makes a difference.

Digital health and AI present incredible opportunities for improving care, as highlighted by Dr. Maxo Luma. However, we must tread cautiously. โ
โ
He warned that digital systems introduced without accountability can deepen existing inequities: "If digital systems are introduced without transparency, they can deepen inequities instead of reducing them." โ
โ
We need to ensure technology serves as a bridge, not a barrier. Letโ€™s commit to ethical governance, allowing innovation to elevate compassionate care for everyone, especially the most vulnerable. โ

Compassionate care goes beyond clinical skills; it is grounded in empathy, dignity, and respect. Dr. Maxo Luma reminded us during his address, "Caregiving is the most fundamental moral act. It is what makes us human."

In a time when the focus can easily shift to efficiency and technology, we must ensure every patient feels heard and valued.

Remember, compassionate care is about presence and engagementโ€”making patients feel they are at the center of their health care journey. Letโ€™s prioritize humanity in every interaction!

In the digital age, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters in health care: compassion. As Dr. Maxo Luma, Executive Director of Partners In Health Liberia, stated in his keynote on World Family Doctor Day, "Healing is not only about diagnosis and treatment. It is also about listening, reassuring, and comforting."

As we embrace innovations like AI and telemedicine, letโ€™s remember that technology can enhance care but never replace empathy or human connection. The future of health care shouldnโ€™t just be digital; it must be deeply human.

Did you know that in 2016, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for an estimated 43% of all deaths and contributed to 37.9% of the national disease burden, as measured by Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs)?

By 2019, NCDs were responsible for approximately 32% of all deaths. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Disease Outlook 2023, the age-standardized mortality rate for four major NCDsโ€”Cardiovascular Disease, Chronic Respiratory Disease, Cancer, and Diabetesโ€”was 533 per 100,000 in males and 545 per 100,000 in females in 2021.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Partners In Health (PIH) is building Liberiaโ€™s next generation of healthcare providers through medical education, training, continuous mentorship, and support. Let's prioritize cardiovascular care together with the theme: "Controlling Hypertension Together!"

In a country with only 298 doctors for 5 million people, finding quality surgical care can feel impossible. Decontee's story exemplifies the urgent need for access to health care.

With PIH and the Maryland County Health Team working together, JJD Memorial Hospital has become a beacon of hope.

From 2019 to 2024, JJD completed 3,581 life-saving surgical cases, proving that health care is attainable, even in rural areas. Access to surgical care is a right, not a privilege. Read more at: pihliberia.org

Life-Changing Care: How Partners In Health is Transforming JJD Hospital

Decontee and Jannet Blagnon traveled from afar for the quality care they found at JJD Hospital. For Jannet, surgery in the Ivory Coast was a luxury she couldnโ€™t afford, but at JJD, she received life-changing treatment without paying a dime. PIH's dedication to affordable, safe, and high-quality surgical care showcases its commitment to eliminating health inequities.

Join us in celebrating his inspiring journey and PIH/CHT's commitment to making health a human right! Read more at: https://pihliberia.org/news/where-access-was-once-impossible
