I join our country men and women in congratulating the State Department for Environment and Climate Change PS. Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng'eno upon his declaration as a national hero by the President H.E Dr. William Samoei Ruto on Mashujaa Day.

I feel proud of his recognition as a champion in the environmental space as the Patron of the Mau Forest Complex Integrated Conservation and Livelihoods Improvement Programme - MFC ICLIP; a 2.5 billion 10-year partners-funded programme.

His action comes in time as the Mau Complex yearns for immediate action to protect the 12 rivers originating from it.

As a partner of the programme, we commit to continue offering undivided support towards rehabilitation of the 33,000 Ha of degraded forest land.

Every Mashujaa Day our country marks since independence grants me gratification and sadness in equal measure.

I get happy that there were selflessly bold men and women who put their lives on 'risky' mode to liberate our country. They lost their lands, homes, had their families broken, some were mutilated while others lost lives. Beyond the challenges; through sweat and blood, they triumphed over the brutal colonialists.

On the other hand, my eyes tear down as I remember the experiences of our forest fighters. The many cases of the many lives lost in the struggle, the war veterans who were severely injured and the many sons and daughters of freedom fighters who remain landless decades after independence. Where is their land that the colonizers never took with them?

Adding salt to the injury, I remember the devoted Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri; the spiritual and military leader of the Mau Mau. He is remembered for his sacrifices to ensure our country got liberated from the British colonial masters. To this day, his remains have never been found despite the many family appeals to have him exhumed for a befitting burial.

I remember the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga as a true patriot and a great friend to the Dedan Kimathi Family.

For years, he walked with us as we commemorated the legendary freedom fighter. He interacted with the family sufficiently to understand our struggles and even stepped in to help when the government was not doing enough.

He was a selfless man who put love for his country and its people before his own gains. I will forever be indebted to his bravery in fighting for democracy, justice and economic empowerment for the people of Kenya.

May his legacy live on 🫡
