🌿 Validation Session on the Nakuru Forest Management & Landscape Restoration Bill 2025 🌿

Wednesday 5th December 2025 marked a significant milestone as stakeholders came together for the validation session of the Nakuru Forest Management and Landscape Restoration Bill 2025. This landmark bill will be instrumental in the establishment and proper management of county forests, as well as the greening and restoration of our natural spaces across Nakuru County.
A key highlight of the session was the recognition of the critical role to be played by WRUAs and other community-based organizations in the restoration, protection, and sustainable management of our natural resources. Community participation remains the backbone of successful environmental conservation.
We are proud that our WRUA was well represented by our Chairman, Secretary, M&E Chairman, alongside other dedicated members from the upper, middle, and lower zones. Various stakeholders actively presented their views and proposals for incorporation into the final bill, ensuring inclusivity and local ownership of this important legislation.
Together, we are shaping a greener, more sustainable future for Nakuru County! 🌱

On Wednesday 26th November 2025, we attended a successful stakeholder engagement session in the Kapkures–Barut area as part of the ongoing Water as Leverage (WaL) initiative and the Njoro River Riparian Restoration Project.

The session brought together key leaders and community representatives to discuss restoration priorities, sustainable water management, and the upcoming physical interventions aimed at reducing flooding, improving water quality, and protecting Lake Nakuru from waste and erosion. We were represented by Mr. Philip Ng’ok – Chairman, Njoro WRUA, Mr. Kamau Muchiri – Secretary, Njoro WRUA, and Mr. Davis Saikwa – Chairman, Barut Chapter along with other members from Barut chapter

Their insights and commitment to safeguarding the Njoro River ecosystem are invaluable as we work together to build a cleaner, safer, and more resilient environment for our community.

A big thank you to all stakeholders who participated and contributed to shaping the next steps of this vital project. Together, we can restore our river and secure our water future.

On Friday, 14th November 2025, the Njoro River Water Resource Users Association (Njoro-WRUA), in partnership with the Barut Game View Association and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), conducted a successful cleanup exercise at Lake Nakuru National Park.

This routine conservation activity brought together dedicated community members and partners with one mission — to protect and preserve our precious water resources. Through the cleanup, we not only improved the lake’s environment but also created awareness on the importance of maintaining a healthy and vibrant lake ecosystem for both people and wildlife.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated, supported, or cheered us on. 🌱💧
Let’s continue working together to conserve our natural heritage.

Members of Njoro WRUA spent time along the river walking a stretch of 5.5km from KALRO bridge Njoro to Kenyatta bridge to monitor the river health as a way of celebration the 2025. Its sickening to realize how the common users and community continue to neglect our rivers.

Our team found rampant dumping of waste including pampers, discharge of effluent waste into the river, washing of clothes inside the river, encroachment into the river, washing of intestine waste (matumbo) from the nearby kichinjio, deforestation along the riparian, illegal abstraction, planting of tree species such as eucalyptus and farming along the river bank.

Members spent time engaging community members on the importance of conserving the river for the sake of their own health and life of the river. We also used the time to sensitize them of the roles of WRUAs hence urging them to join WRUA.

The event which was attended by NGAO officers, WRUA leadership and members from upper, middle and lower zones of the river was a perfect way to help us understand issues affecting our river and identify action points for conservation and the type of stakeholders to engage.

In every step we made, we appreciated that "Every drop matters, especially in the face of a changing climate; we should all conserve water for a sustainable future."

As part of conserving Njoro river, we are partnering with Nakuru County Government - Official through the department of Environment, Energy Climate Change & Natural Resources to rehabilitate 5km of riparian land from KALRO Bridge to Kenyatta bridge, where we shall plant 5000+ indigenous trees, fruit trees and nappier grass as well as conduct community sensitization. As such the Chief Officer accompanied by the Director Environment & Climate change, Sub County Administrator and ward administrator and the Ward Climate Change Planning Committee handed over the project funded by Flocca to the contractor who will work with Njoro WRUA to execute the project.
The chairman lauded the collaboration and assured the County Government that the project will be well monitored and sustained. As a way of promoting WRUA members efforts, the contractor agreed to procure seedlings from the members.
We call upon other stakeholders to follow suit and support our conservation efforts by adopting sections of the river for rehabilitation in order to restore the life of our river which is a source of livelihood for thousands of Nakuru residents
