🌿🔥 From field visits to joint dialogue: advancing integrated wildfire management in Jordan

As part of the SIMMER Project – Strategic Integration of Operational and Legal Frameworks to Enhance Resilience and Wildfire Management in the Mediterranean Basin, implemented under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme and funded by the European Union, Wadi for Sustainable Ecosystems Development continues to work with national partners and stakeholders towards a more integrated approach to wildfire management in Jordan.

📍This phase began with a series of field visits to identify a suitable pilot site for the project, including a visit conducted on Monday, 20 July 2026, to several locations in Jerash Governorate: Widyan Al Sham, Thaghret Asfour, Baleelah and Dibbeen Forest. The visits assessed wildfire history, ecological conditions, restoration needs and the potential for implementing pilot interventions at the candidate sites.

Building on this process, Wadi Community Nursery hosted a Pilot Site Selection Workshop on Monday, 17 August 2026, bringing together representatives of relevant national institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Civil Defense Department, and The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, alongside Wadi’s team, experts and consultants involved in assessing wildfire governance and management in Jordan.

The workshop explored wildfire risks and history, causes, data and technology gaps, institutional coordination, and the social, economic, technological, legal and institutional factors influencing integrated wildfire management. Participants also discussed criteria for selecting the pilot site and potential interventions covering prevention, monitoring and early warning, wildfire response, post-fire rehabilitation and ecosystem restoration.

🧭 The findings from the field visits and workshop discussions will help guide the project’s next steps and the selection of a pilot approach that can contribute to strengthening national knowledge, institutional cooperation and integrated wildfire management practices in Jordan.

🌿 On Saturday, 1 August 2026, Wadi for Sustainable Ecosystems Development organised an open day for the Wadi community at its nursery in Al Salt, for Wadi members and their families.

The day began with a presentation highlighting Wadi’s journey since its establishment in 2018, its key programmes and projects, and the progress achieved across its environmental and development work. This was followed by a guided tour of the nursery, where participants learned about the different stages of seedling production, from seed selection and growing-medium preparation to hardening and preparing seedlings for planting. 🌱

Children took part in practical activities, including planting and watering seedlings and learning how to care for them at home. Meanwhile, the other participants explored seedling-quality standards, root-system health, irrigation methods, propagation and nursery production processes. 🪴

The day also provided space for conversations, new connections and welcoming new members into the Wadi community, which continues to grow alongside Wadi’s expanding programmes and activities. 💚
