This timeline captures the progresses and achievements in eliminating vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B virus. Since the first goal was set in 2010 by the Pan American Health Organization, many countries have achieved elimination or are on the path to elimination.

If we are serious about reducing HIV and other s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), we must understand how people are behaving, not simply how we assume they are behaving. And some of the Jamaican data challenges those assumptions.

We can have different beliefs and values about s*x, and we do not have to agree on everything people do in their private lives. But we should be able to agree that embarrassment, assumptions, and fear should never prevent someone from knowing their status, protecting themselves and their partners, or getting the health care they need.

When it comes to your health, what you do matters more than what you call yourself.

In the Caribbean, new HIV infections declined by 31% among men and 28% among women since 2010- including a 38% and 39% decline respectively among young people aged 15–24- but the pace remains too slow to meet regional targets.

“Given the current funding realities, Governments must move with alacrity to translate political commitments to increase domestic funding for HIV prevention programmes and community-led initiatives that can help in reducing the number of new infections. The progress in reducing AIDS-related deaths and eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, in several countries, show us what is possible in the Caribbean when political commitment turns into action,” said Luisa Cabal, UNAIDS Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Health services delivery within Trinidad & Tobago require greater coordination and administrative oversight across Regional Health Authorities (RHAs). The Ministry of Health has partnered with The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) to address these issues.
