🌿 How is climate change transforming the Amazon?

Join us for the next IUPAP–UNESCO International Colloquium on Physics for Society, featuring Professor Paulo Artaxo, a leading authority on tropical atmospheric science.

In “Climate Change and the Impacts on the Amazon,” Prof. Artaxo will explore how rising temperatures, decreasing precipitation and increasingly frequent climate extremes are affecting the Amazon rainforest, its ecosystems and its capacity to store carbon.

🌎 The talk will bring together decades of research to examine the physical processes behind these changes and their wider implications for climate and sustainability.

🌍 The official website of ICWIP2027 is now live!

We are excited to announce the launch of the website for the 9th International Conference on Women in Physics (ICWIP2027), which will take place 7–11 June 2027 at the National University of Singapore.

Organized every three years by the IUPAP Working Group on Women in Physics (WG5), ICWIP brings together the global physics community to share research, exchange experiences, and advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in physics.

The new website includes information on the conference, venue, programme, travel, and participation, with more updates to come in the coming months.

👤 Meet the Chair of C18: Mathematical Physics

We are pleased to introduce Simone Warzel, Chair of the IUPAP Commission on Mathematical Physics (C18).

A Professor of Mathematical Quantum Physics at the TU München, his research focuses on mathematical quantum physics. As Chair of C18, he promotes international exchange across the broad field of mathematical physics, fostering collaboration between researchers and strengthening ties with organizations such as the International Association of Mathematical Physics (IAMP) and the Association of Women in Mathematical Physics (AWMP).

∞ The Commission on Mathematical Physics (C18) promotes the exchange of ideas and collaboration within the international mathematical physics community, highlighting the vital interplay between mathematics and physics and supporting scientific advances at the intersection of the two disciplines.

👤 Meet the Chair of C17: Laser Physics and Photonics

We are pleased to introduce Kathy Lüdge, Chair of the IUPAP Commission on Laser Physics and Photonics (C17).

A Full Professor of Computational Physics at the Technische Universität Ilmenau, her research spans nonlinear dynamics, laser modeling, photonics, and neuromorphic computing. Her work explores how optical systems can enable efficient analog computing, while also advancing the understanding of nanostructured semiconductor lasers and their emission dynamics.

🌍 The Commission on Laser Physics and Photonics (C17) promotes international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge across the global community working in laser physics, photonics, and quantum electronics, fostering scientific progress and cooperation in these rapidly evolving fields. ⚛️

The IUPAP Commission on Laser Physics and Photonics (C17) is seeking nominations for its biennial Early Career Scientist Prizes, recognizing outstanding achievements in Laser Physics and Photonics.

Two awards will be presented:
🔹 One for fundamental research
🔹 One for applied research

This establishes the first antimatter quantum bit and has the potential to improve precision antiproton magnetic moment measurements by at least a factor of 100.”

“For his crucial contributions and leadership in the development of advanced machine learning algorithms for identifying decays of boosted heavy particles and their application in the search for H->cc decays at the Large Hadron Collider.”

🌍 How can the United Nations better address the complex challenges facing our world?

The International Science Council and its member organizations have issued an open letter to candidates for the next UN Secretary-General, calling for science to be recognized as a core pillar of global governance and multilateral cooperation.

As a member of the ISC, IUPAP contributed to the development of this initiative, which advocates for stronger science-policy interfaces, greater international scientific collaboration, and more equitable access to knowledge worldwide.

🎓 Congratulations to Gloria Platero, Chair of IUPAP Commission C8 on Semiconductors, on her induction as a Full Member of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain.

⚛️ In her inaugural lecture, The Role of Quantum Dots and Floquet Engineering in Quantum Technologies, Prof. Platero explored some of the most exciting challenges and opportunities in quantum science, highlighting the potential of quantum dots, quantum simulators, and Floquet engineering for future technologies.

🌍 A leading figure in condensed matter and quantum physics, Gloria Platero has also recently been elected Vice President of IUPAP and continues to play a key role in advancing international collaboration in physics.

As she reminded the audience in her speech: “Science is a collective endeavor.”

👏 Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.
