The European Glut1 Deficiency Organisation
Glut1 Deficiency is a rare metabolic disorder where the transport of energy to the brain is impaired. This is due to a defect in the glucose transporting protein Glut1. (For this reason the condition is also called Glucose Transporter Type 1 Deficiency.) The reduced energy supply can lead to developmental delay, seizures and movement disorders, though symptoms vary between patients and some are more severely affected than others.
Currently there is no cure, but for many patients the Ketogenic Diet is an effective treatment. This high fat diet provides an alternative source of fuel for the brain in the form of ketones.
The European Glut1 Deficiency Organisation was founded in April 2019 to represent Glut1 patients in Europe. Its aim is to strengthen the co-operation and exchange between the Glut1 communities in different countries. We want to work together to raise awareness of this condition, to promote research and to support Glut1 patients and their families.
We currently have members from Italy, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Poland and Spain and hope to add more countries soon!
