The first batch of our Urban Farming Training Programme has begun at Peyad Souhrida Club, with 15 participants taking the first step towards growing food sustainably at home. 🌵
Organised by Thanal in collaboration with RWDI, the programme is designed to equip urban and peri-urban communities with practical knowledge and skills in urban farming through a structured learning journey.
The first session, led by Abhirami N G from Thanal's Agroecology Team, introduced participants to the fundamentals of organic farming, its importance in today's context, pot selection, and potting mixture preparation for healthy plant growth.
The enthusiasm and engagement of participants were evident from the discussions that followed, with questions ranging from pest management in vegetable crops to sourcing organic inputs and improving soil health.
The programme comprises 9 modules delivered through 17 sessions, combining practical demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on learning.
Participants will explore topics including soil health, kitchen garden planning, organic manure preparation, pest and disease management, composting, biofertilizers, irrigation methods, and fruit tree cultivation in urban spaces.
Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a certificate of completion.
This marks the beginning of a wider effort to strengthen local capacities for sustainable food production across Thiruvananthapuram, and we look forward to expanding the programme to more communities across the city.
