Rainforest conservation is often framed as protecting what remains. Equally important is recognising nature's remarkable ability to recover when given the opportunity.

A recent global study found that tropical forests can regain much of their biodiversity within a few decades through natural regeneration. The finding reinforces a simple but powerful idea: protecting existing forests and allowing degraded ecosystems to recover can be as important as restoration efforts themselves.

As climate and biodiversity crises deepen, safeguarding intact forests remains one of the most effective actions we can take.

Sustainable choices begin with reuse. ♻️

To promote sustainable celebrations and reduce dependence on single-use plastic and disposable products, Jeevanam Utensil Bank was inaugurated today at Lakshmi Menon Memorial Hall, Thiruvananthapuram.

The initiative, implemented by Thanal with CSR support from RWDI, makes utensils and related equipment available on rent for celebrations, community gatherings and public events—encouraging a shift towards more sustainable choices.

RWDI India Director Rahul P. S. inaugurated the initiative by handing over the first set of utensils to the Keerthi Self Help Group of Cherukara Ooru, Kulathupuzha, which will manage the Utensil Bank. The initiative is expected to support both waste reduction efforts and local livelihood opportunities.

The first batch of our Urban Farming Training Programme has begun at Peyad Souhrida Club, with 15 participants taking the first step towards growing food sustainably at home. 🌵

Organised by Thanal in collaboration with RWDI, the programme is designed to equip urban and peri-urban communities with practical knowledge and skills in urban farming through a structured learning journey.

The first session, led by Abhirami N G from Thanal's Agroecology Team, introduced participants to the fundamentals of organic farming, its importance in today's context, pot selection, and potting mixture preparation for healthy plant growth.

The enthusiasm and engagement of participants were evident from the discussions that followed, with questions ranging from pest management in vegetable crops to sourcing organic inputs and improving soil health.

The programme comprises 9 modules delivered through 17 sessions, combining practical demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on learning.

Participants will explore topics including soil health, kitchen garden planning, organic manure preparation, pest and disease management, composting, biofertilizers, irrigation methods, and fruit tree cultivation in urban spaces.

Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a certificate of completion.

This marks the beginning of a wider effort to strengthen local capacities for sustainable food production across Thiruvananthapuram, and we look forward to expanding the programme to more communities across the city.

The ocean shapes Kerala's climate, supports livelihoods, sustains biodiversity, and provides food for millions. Yet it is often the ocean that bears the burden of our waste and pollution.

This year's theme, Reimagine, invites us to rethink our relationship with the ocean—not merely as beneficiaries, but as active guardians.

This post draws inspiration from a familiar childhood memory in Kerala: writing "Kadalamma Kalli" on the shoreline and waiting for the waves to wash it away.

But if the ocean could respond today, perhaps it would ask:

"I'm not the culprit... who polluted me?"

This World Oceans Day, let's move from inheritors to guardians of the ocean.

🌊 Reduce single-use plastics

🌊 Keep waste out of rivers, canals and beaches

🌊 Support coastal and marine conservation

🌊 Respect mangroves, estuaries and coastal ecosystems

🌊 Speak up for healthier oceans

Because what reaches the ocean eventually reaches all of us.

Children don't always connect with waste bins, segregation charts, or awareness sessions.

But they do connect with stories.

As part of the Zero Waste School initiative supported by Equifax and implemented by Thanal, we created Zu.Zu —> a friendly school superhero who helps children notice the small actions that make a big difference.

From saving water and switching off unused lights to using the right bin and keeping classrooms clean, Zu.Zu turns everyday environmental habits into something children can relate to.

The best part?

Soon after meeting him, children started spotting Zu.Zu around their school —> on posters, near the MCF, and in the places where good habits begin.

Sometimes environmental education starts with information.

Sometimes it starts with imagination.

💚 Meet Zu.Zu, the Zero Waste School Hero.

At Government L.P.S. Chenkottukonam, this year's Environment Day marked the inauguration of two spaces that will become part of everyday school life.

♻️ A Material Collection Facility (MCF) to help students understand waste segregation and responsible material management through practice, not just lessons.

🪴A Kitchen Garden with 50 saplings planted, creating a space where children can grow organic vegetables, care for plants, and connect with where food comes from.

Supported by Equifax through its CSR initiative and implemented by Thanal, the programme brought together students, teachers, parents, and community members around a shared vision of a cleaner, greener school.

Today, we planted more than saplings.

We planted habits, responsibility, and a sense of stewardship that can grow for years to come.
