Can classrooms become spaces of healing?

At the Comparative and International Education Society Conference ( ), Piramal Foundation shared findings from the Art-Based Capacity Building & Training (ACBT) programme in Jammu & Kashmir.

Implemented across 20 districts over six months, the initiative trained 112 teachers as frontline wellbeing facilitators, equipping them to integrate social-emotional learning and arts-based approaches into classrooms.

The initiative was enabled through a collaborative partnership between the Government of J&K, Department of School Education, J&K, Directorate of School Education Jammu, Directorate of School Education Kashmir, The Red Pencil International and Piramal Foundation — combining institutional support, on-ground implementation, and global expertise in arts-based therapy and SEL.

The study recorded measurable improvements in teacher capability, including a 55% increase in art therapy knowledge, 42% improvement in classroom application skills, and overall growth in SEL competencies.

The findings showed measurable improvements in teacher capability, classroom practices, and student wellbeing — demonstrating how education can support healing and peacebuilding in conflict-affected contexts.

A proud moment for Piramal Foundation.

We are honoured to be recognised for “Excellence in Holistic Wellbeing” at the BW Festival of Wellbeing 2026.

We are grateful to BW Businessworld for this recognition, and to Emory University’s Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics for their long-term partnership in advancing human flourishing.

This recognition celebrates the Foundation’s long-term work on wellbeing through compassion and social-emotional learning, including:

Cognitively Based Compassion Training (CBCT®) for employees and public system leaders — helping build self-awareness, compassion, resilience, and service-oriented leadership.
Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning®) across states and school systems — supporting educators and schools in nurturing compassion, emotional awareness, ethical thinking, and wellbeing among children.

Building institutional capacity and leadership for wellbeing within government systems.
Creating sustainable models that integrate wellbeing into organisational and public system cultures.
What makes this recognition especially encouraging is that it acknowledges wellbeing not as a standalone programme, but as a systemic approach connecting personal transformation, leadership development, institutional culture, and systems change.

The award was received by Monal Jayaram on behalf of the Foundation.

This recognition belongs to our colleagues, partners, government officials, teachers, school leaders, and communities who have contributed to this journey over the years.

Together, we continue to strengthen wellbeing with compassion, purpose, and sewa bhaav.

Hatneitinng Changsan’s journey was never about sudden change.

Before joining the Karuna Fellowship, she was already balancing many roles—mother, daughter-in-law, small business owner, and caregiver. But through the fellowship, she began travelling across villages for field visits and community health work, meeting people beyond her immediate world and building deeper connections with communities.

One difficult journey during the monsoon stayed with her forever. Stranded far from home after her scooter stopped working, she experienced unexpected kindness from people she once thought of as strangers.

Moments like these reshaped her understanding of care, trust, and community.

Today, people in villages recognise her not as a “madam,” but as someone they can approach, rely on, and speak with openly.

Her story is one of quiet leadership—built not through power, but through compassion and consistency.

Piramal Foundation’s Sanjeevani Village Health Outreach Program (VHOP), Mobile Medical Units (MMU) team in Assam have been recognised for Excellence in Non Communicable Disease Care by the Joint Director of Health Services (National Health Mission), Nalbari, Assam.
Deep in the remotest corners of Assam, where the nearest clinic is often a day’s journey away, a quiet transformation is unfolding right at the doorsteps of underserved communities.
For families living in these hard-to-reach terrains, chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension often go completely undetected until they reach advanced, critical stages. This is where our Sanjeevani Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) step in, bridging the healthcare gap by delivering free, consistent screening, early diagnosis, and systematic treatment tracking directly to the people.
Taking specialized healthcare to the last mile does more than just save lives; it shields vulnerable families from catastrophic medical expenses and fortifies the entire public health ecosystem from the ground up. This crucial impact has recently earned our Assam MMU teams heartfelt appreciation and high recognition for their stellar work in managing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
This honor is a beautiful testament to Sewa Bhaav—the deeply rooted spirit of service that guides our frontline healthcare heroes. Driven by personal empathy, they serve every single individual with a mindset that puts community well-being, care, and human dignity at the absolute center, proving that true system transformation always begins with a compassionate heart.
We are incredibly delighted by this milestone and extend our heartiest kudos to the entire Assam MMU team for their unwavering dedication to building a healthier, more equitable future!

“Most people in India at your age are still in their heads. You have moved that energy towards your heart…”

In his heartfelt address to Gandhi Fellowship Batch 17, Aditya Natraj shared why he believes this generation of fellows is uniquely prepared to help build a more compassionate and inclusive Bharat.

Reflecting on India’s journey across generations, he spoke about the incredible opportunity young changemakers have today — to create impact not only through knowledge and innovation, but through empathy, emotional awareness, resilience, and human connection.

He reminded fellows that while technology and AI may reshape the future, the ability to influence people with compassion, navigate uncertainty, and lead with purpose will always remain deeply valuable.

“…explode with compassion and see what happens to truly build Bharat.”

As Batch 17 steps into the next phase of their journeys, this message stands as a meaningful reminder to carry the spirit of service and humanity into all their future endeavours.

Congratulations to all graduating fellows. 💛

“When you began to see India through people — their struggles, dignity, resilience and hope — something within you changed.”

In his special message to Gandhi Fellows Batch 17, Mr. Ajay Piramal reflected on the extraordinary journey of the Gandhi Fellowship — from a small cohort of 10 fellows in 2008 to a thriving community of 4,000+ fellows and alumni creating impact across the country today.

He acknowledged the courage it takes to work closely with communities, navigate uncertainty, and continue showing up even when change feels slow.

Through stories of alumni leading change in governance, entrepreneurship, sustainability, education, and public service, he reminded fellows that the true essence of leadership lies in compassion, service, and the willingness to contribute towards a better future for all.

As Batch 17 graduates, this message stands as both a celebration of how far they have come and a reminder to carry the spirit of service, compassion, and impact into all their future endeavours.
