Philanthropy is not only about how much is given. It is also about the people, communities, shared values, networks and capabilities that make sustained social impact possible.
The Commission on Asian Philanthropy, with Piramal Foundation among its 13 Commissioners, has released its Interim Report 2026. The report estimates US$109 billion in domestic philanthropic giving in 2024, across participating jurisdictions representing approximately 70% of Asia’s population and 80% of its GDP.
It brings forward three key findings: Asia’s philanthropic ecosystems go beyond money; philanthropy can strengthen national missions; and targeted investment and cross-learning can accelerate progress. Looking ahead, philanthropic giving could reach approximately US$1.5 trillion over the next decade, with a further US$189 billion potentially unlocked through cross-learning and innovation.
For India, an estimated 81% of domestic philanthropic giving comes from mass individuals, highlighting the important role of citizens and communities. The report’s recognition of faith-based philanthropy also resonates with Piramal Foundation’s philosophy of sewa bhaav, the spirit of selfless service.
