URJO was established in 2007 in Kolkata to empower 40+ women and nurture underprivileged children. The word URJO literally means “Power”.

It is a voluntary organisation which emphasises on the power within women, notwithstanding ignorance of it.

Concluding Session of the 7 days Martial Arts Training Workshop

The 7 days Martial Arts Training Workshop at Alipore Nabodisha Center concluded on 23rd September,2026. 15 children were trained during the workshop. The response from the participants and the supervisors were very encouraging and they had made good progress. Discussions are on to give them advanced training after 2/3 months.

Urjo awarded the participants completion certificates. Gift hampers were also given to all the 30 children of the Center on the festive occasion and 10kgs sugar was donated to Women's Interlink Foundation for Nijoloy , their shelter for underprivileged and homeless girls.

*Inaugural session of the 7 days Martial Arts Training Workshop at Alipore*

The Inaugural Session of the 7 days Martial Arts Training Workshop at Alipore Nabadisha Center, (an educational project of WIF & Kolkata Police for street and working children), was held on *Wednesday, 16th September at 4pm*.

Seeing the usefulness of the workshop and the enthusiasm of the girls at Nijoloy, WIF's chairperson requested Urjo to organise this workshop in their other centers.

The inaugural session at Nabadisha was very well attended and the enthusiasm among the kids were palpable. Due to limitation in space, Urjo has decided to do this Workshop in two phases for the 30 kids. The first 15 will be trained in the next one week and the remaining 15 will be trained after the festival season. Soma, the lead trainer , came with 4 young trainers to give demos and then followed it up with training the kids on the basic moves.

Pujo celebration with underprivileged girls & distribution of sanitary napkins
Urjo's next Pujo event was celebrated on 9th September, 2026 at Nijoloy at Madhyamgram, a shelter for the homeless and underprivileged girls.
To celebrate the festive season, the girls put up a cultural programme,showcasing their musical and dance talent which was enjoyed by the Urjo volunteers.
In order to spread cheer and joy among the girls in sync with Urjo's motto of 'Bhalo Rekho' , Urjo distributed gifts to 54 girls below 18 years and 26 girls above 18 years of age.
Since Urjo also focuses on Health and Hygiene, Urjo distributed 540 sanitary napkins to Nijoloy ( which is their quarterly requirement).

The members were also taken to the Block Unit where inmates stitched items and block printed saris & scarves, made by the resident girls, are sold.
Overall, it was a highly satisfying event.

The Cataract Surgery Project

The cataract surgery for Apanghar Mashimas started in the last week of June when four Mashimas were taken to the Calcutta Lions Bimal Poddar Eye Hospital for eye check up. Two of them didn't require cataract surgery and were treated with eye drops.

The other two needed surgery...one Mashima needed surgery in both the eyes while the other one needed in one eye since she already had undergone a cataract surgery on the other eye. This required several rounds to the hospital. First was the surgery and then the final check up and the situation was further aggravated by the high blood sugar level of one of the Mashimas which had to be brought under control before surgery was done. As a result, this added to the number of visits to the hospital.

The Project was finally completed on 8th September, 2026 with Shila Mashima's check up done and spectacles ordered.

This Project spanned a period of 3 months approximately and involved long hours spent by Urjo volunteers, sometimes braving inclement weather and navigating through waterlogged areas. The smile on the face of Mashimas, made the Project worth the effort.

Rakhi Celebration with Brahmakumaris

Urjo started its festive celebration on Tuesday, 25th August,2026 with Rakhi Celebration with Brahma Kumaris. This was in sync with Urjo's motto of Bhalo Theko.

The Programme was as follows:

* Spiritual Talk by a member of Brahma Kumari
* Rakhi Ceremony – Tying of Rakhi to each other
* Celebration of the spirit of love, harmony and togetherness

Urjo's Plantation Drive
Urjo organised a successful Plantation Drive in Acharya Prafulla Chandra Park in Phoolbagan, Kolkata , on 21st August,2026. This was done in collaboration with Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Members planted several fruit trees and a few flowering trees.
