It was not a boardroom. It was not a government initiative. It was not a well-funded organisation with a grand plan.
It was a single room in Chennai, where a small group of passionate volunteers sat together and asked themselves one question that would change thousands of lives:
"Why do people die in emergencies when help was right there?"
They had seen it. A road accident where bystanders froze. A cardiac arrest in a crowded mall where nobody moved. A child choking while adults watched helplessly, waiting for someone else to act. Not because people didn't care — but because nobody had ever taught them what to do.
India, they realised, had a problem that no ambulance, no hospital, and no government policy could fully solve. The gap was not in the system. The gap was in the person standing right next to the victim — the common man — who had the will to help but not the knowledge.
And so, on 2nd October 2006, with no funding, no fame, and no guarantee that anyone would listen — ALERT was born - "Jananam"
Not a medical organisation. Not a charity built on donations alone. A movement. Built on a single, radical belief — that ordinary people could save lives. That a student, a teacher, a parent, an auto driver, a shopkeeper — anyone — with the right knowledge and the right training, could be the difference between life and death in those critical minutes before professional help arrives.
It still begins the same way it always did.
One person. One ALERT. One belief that they can save a life.
Community first response is a civic responsibility.
