As part of Refugee Week, our wonderful Welcome Ambassadors volunteers had the pleasure of leading a walking tour of Waterford today in partnership with Buíon Phort Láirge ().

We welcomed a group of refugees and shared some of Waterford’s key landmarks, local history, and useful places around the city. We were delighted to support the group and help them get to know Waterford a little better.

Despite the rain, spirits were high, and we had a fantastic time together. It was a lovely opportunity to connect, share stories, and celebrate the welcoming community spirit that Refugee Week is all about.

What an absolutely fantastic morning we had today with Tramore Eco Group as part of Refugee Week!

Volunteers were delighted to take part in meadow management work in beautiful Tramore. Looking after wildflower meadows helps support bees, butterflies, and other wildlife, while encouraging biodiversity and protecting local habitats. By helping to care for these spaces, we are playing a small but important role in protecting nature for future generations.

The weather was certainly on our side today, making it the perfect opportunity to spend time outdoors and enjoy everything that beautiful Tramore has to offer.

A huge thank you to everyone at Tramore Eco Group for their support, guidance, and for showing us how to carry out the work effectively. We learned so much and truly appreciated the warm welcome.

We would also like to say a very special thank you to The Donut Bar Tramore for their wonderful support and generosity. Treating our volunteers to tea, coffee, and some absolutely delicious donuts was the perfect way to finish the day! It means so much to know that local businesses in our community support volunteering and the people who give their time to help others. Our volunteers left feeling happy, appreciated, and well looked after so thank you, The Donut Bar!

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from Waterford Hospice to meet our wonderful volunteer crochet group.

Over the past months, our volunteers have worked hard to create these colourful blankets with care, kindness, and plenty of laughter along the way. We always try to make our blankets as bright and cheerful as possible, and every stitch is made in a positive and friendly atmosphere. We hope that warmth and positivity will be felt by the patients who receive them.

We are incredibly grateful that the team from Waterford Hospice could visit us, get to know our volunteers, and see the work that goes into every blanket.

The greatest joy for us is knowing that these blankets have now been handed over and are already on their way to the people who need them most.

Thank you, Waterford Hospice , for the wonderful work you do every day. 💙

One step forward towards a more accessible Waterford

Thank you to Waterford Age Friendly for organising the walkability audit and for inviting us to join. Huge thank you to our Board member May Doyle, for making the steps.

Waterford Volunteer Centre Waterford Older People's Council

Today, as part of the Age Friendly Waterford Programme, we carried out a Walkability Audit in some of Waterford City's most important and vibrant public spaces - along Merchants Quay, the Viking Triangle and Cultural Quarter.

These historic and cultural areas are at the heart of city life, attracting residents, visitors, workers and tourists every day. They are places where people come to connect, access services, enjoy arts and culture and participate in community life.

Ensuring that these spaces are safe, accessible, welcoming and easy to navigate for people of all ages and abilities is essential to creating an inclusive and age friendly city.

We were delighted to be joined by a diverse group of participants whose lived experiences and perspectives brought real value to the audit. By walking the routes together and discussing both the strengths and challenges of the area, we gained valuable insights into how the public realm can better support mobility, independence, social participation and healthy ageing.

A sincere thank you to everyone who took part today. Your contributions will help inform future improvements and ensure that Waterford continues to develop as a city that is accessible, inclusive and welcoming for all.
