Well done to our members Annie and Michelle at the Q***r Market during Pride of the Déise! 🏳️‍🌈 Got to meet lots of beautiful folks out enjoying the festivities as well as have a chat about the links between LQBTQIA+ causes and organising action within the housing movement too. So much shared history and learning from each other to be had from the pride movement when it comes to collectivity and taking action 💪 and so much fun always as Pride! Thanks for having us ❤️
Also a big shoutout to Michelle and her article which brings up some brilliant points about intersectionality (swipe to the end) 👏

Statement on Fuel Protests

The Community Action Tenants Union (CATU) recognises the deep anger and frustration driving the current fuel protests. Skyrocketing fuel costs are part of a wider cost of living crisis that is placing unbearable pressure on communities across the island. People are feeling these pressures every day, trying to heat their homes, get to work, care for families, stretch wages that just aren’t going far enough, trying their hardest to live with dignity.

This is a vital time for workers and tenants to organise. CATU believes we need to unite in support of demands that remove the power that the private market has over our lives and our services.

For our members this means:
- Cutting and capping rents

- Stop linking rent to “market rate” that has no relationship to what we can afford.

- Universal public housing.

- Focusing on retrofitting rather than redevelopment where it is public owned and aids the creation of public jobs.

- Taking the vultures out of housing, including the expansion of airbnb and short term letting agencies who are soaking up homes.

- End sky high energy bills and profiteering by energy companies.

As a community union, CATU organises not only around housing, but around the broader conditions that our neighbours live in. We support the right of workers and communities to take collective action in pursuit of economic justice, especially in times of crisis.

We are aware of legitimate criticisms of some elements involved in the organisation of the fuel protests. CATU remains firmly committed to anti-racism, solidarity, and inclusion, and we reject any attempt to divide working class communities along racial or other lines. The real root of the current crisis is Government greed and neglect, not in our neighbours and fellow workers. Solutions to the cost of living crisis must unite people, not encourage scapegoating or exclusion

CATU Waterford Statement on Horrific Mount Suir Incident:

The tragic news about the injuries suffered by 2 young children as they fell out of a 2nd story balcony has shone a spotlight once again on the issues facing those living at Mount Suir Apartments.
Just weeks after we organised a meeting of residents at the nearby library, this incident clearly highlights the issues around safety and maintenance which residents have been raising for many years.
Reacting to the horrific event, a Mount Suir resident who we have been in contact with had this to say:
“I live in Block B. I wouldn't leave my cat out on the balcony, never mind my daughter. The place is a death trap. I hope those 2 children will be okay.”

In recent years, momentum for a campaign to improve conditions has grown, as residents increasingly push for improvements to the dangerous conditions at Mount Suir. Reaching out to councillors achieved no tangible changes, and various residents also previously spoke with print media and on the radio. We have in recent months been building support for collective action in order to improve conditions and safety.
CATU Waterford members have been speaking to Mount Suir residents for months before this, highlighting the conditions publicly and only recently held a public meeting in recent weeks due to the conditions there.

A horrible event like this does not happen in isolation. This is due to years of neglect, despite repeated calls from residents for their concerns about safety and conditions to be acknowledged and acted upon. It should not have to take something as terrible as this to happen in order to get those in charge of maintenance to act.
In our various engagements with residents as a union, we have seen and heard first-hand the impact that this decaying building is having on the lives of everyone living there. It is past time that residents come together to finally achieve what we all deserve, a safe home.

At CATU Waterford, we plan to keep updated with residents on the situation, and again urge everyone at Mount Suir Apartments to join CATU in order to fight collectively to improve conditions before any more tragic incidents occur:

Recently, CATU Waterford held a public meeting with Mount Suir Apartments residents about the outrageous conditions they face.

The meeting started with an explainer about CATU and the work done in Mount Suir so fair by the branch. The floor was then opened up to residents to speak on how they’re being impacted. Mould, damp and structural issues were common across all tenants, many experienced severe flooding during this winter and are suffering health damages from the mould.

It was decided that only collective action could resolve these issues and a group chat of tenants and CATU members was created to progress this. CATU Waterford plans to conduct further organising efforts with the tenants to build a bigger and stronger group capable on taking on the landlords.

If you are a resident and interested in getting involved, please reach out to us!

Yesterday evening, our members spoke with residents at Mount Suir Apartments about our upcoming residents meeting today, Thursday 29th at 6pm in Carrickphierish Library.

Attend the meeting here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1WDLDZYP8E/

There was a lot of interest and our members again saw first-hand some of the horrible conditions these residents are forced to live in.

There is only one way to fix this situation: residents working collectively to push for conditions to be improved! Join CATU - https://catuireland.org/join - and be a part of putting an end to bad-quality housing!
