We have a small quantity of locally harvested yellow rattle for sale if you are interested in developing your own wildflower meadow.

A special thanks to the Department of Rural Community and the Gaeltacht for the funding via the Local Enhancement Program of €1,500 which was required to create our recently launched Greenhouse Hub in Rathcabbin!

We had no base or storage shed to call our own for years. Now we have a wonderful space that includes the steel shed, an outdoor work area and our new greenhouse. This central base allows volunteers to work more effectively.

Our future is now more sustainable having achieved the LEP 2026 which allowed us to complete the final stages of this project. Thanks again to everyone that helped, at any stage along the way, as the idea and space came to life.

Over 250 records submitted last month have just been validated and will be loaded to Biodiversity Maps shortly.

Fun Butterfly Facts for Kids 🦋

Did you know? Some butterflies, like the Harvester butterfly, get their nutrients in surprising ways! Instead of just sipping nectar, they sometimes feed on things like sweat, rotting fruit, and even blood. Nature is wild.

Rathcabbin’s Greenhouse Hub came alive last Thursday evening for its official opening!

All funders and those in the community that support us through the year were thanked. (Previous posts mention many of these this year also)

A special mention was given to Flann Kennedy and Denise Clancy for their consistent work again at the core of the village this year.

Everyone that helped make this happen in any small way is appreciated!. It’s vital to us to finally have a shed to store items and as a workspace and our greenhouse to continue to create pollinator friendly flowers and grow items for the village, operate as a foundation for plant sale in future years, stand as a base for CE scheme & Tidy Towns and a place where can learn and trial things too.

Thanks to everyone who came to see Rathcabbin Tidy Towns new base, to The pastoral council for donating the space to us, Fr Tom for blessing this growth area and to a member of our youth Tidy Towns team, Ben, for cutting the ribbon.

An enjoyable summer evening in the village’s new workspace, our greenhouse hub!

Yellow Rattle harvested from our native wildflower meadow. Our meadow is now in it's fourth year.

Why sow Yellow Rattle?
Often called the “meadow maker”, Yellow Rattle is one of the most useful native wildflowers for creating and maintaining a flower-rich meadow.

Yellow Rattle is an annual hemiparasitic wildflower. As it develops, it attaches to the roots of nearby host plants, particularly grasses, and draws some of its water and nutrients from them.

This weakens vigorous grass growth, reducing competition and creating more light and space for other wildflowers to establish.

Yellow Rattle does not eliminate grass, and it is not a substitute for good meadow management. Instead, it helps create a better balance between grasses and flowering plants over time.
