PUBLIC SECTOR STRIKES: DO YOU SUPPORT?

Hundreds of thousands of public sector workers across Ireland are preparing for industrial action, with strikes planned for Wednesday, October 14th and Wednesday, October 21st.

The planned action comes amid ongoing disputes over pay and working conditions, with trade unions seeking improvements for their members.

The industrial action is expected to involve workers across a range of public services, including teachers, healthcare workers and local authority staff.

The strikes will result in school closures and significant disruption to public services across the country, including here in Offaly.

Offaly Photographer's Sleepy Gosling Photo Reaches Finals of International Competition

An amateur nature photographer living in County Offaly has reached the finals of a major international wildlife photography competition, thanks to a photograph captured at Finnamore Lakes, just outside Tullamore.

Celine Nic Oireachtaigh, who lives in Lumcloon, is among just 43 finalists selected from over 10,000 entries across 112 countries in the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards 2026.

Large crowds gathered at The Well, on the Offaly side of Moate, this evening for a major meeting focused on the cost of living.

Fuel and home-heating costs, taxation and pressures facing farmers were among the issues raised, with a number of politicians also addressing the gathering.

The meeting was organised by members of the group involved in nationwide fuel protests earlier this year, with further protest action potentially on the cards as organisers consider their next steps.

A fantastic achievement for The Harbour Masters House in Shannon Harbour, which has been crowned B&B of the Year 2026 in the Small Stay category at the Georgina Campbell Irish Food & Hospitality Awards.

The award was presented at the InterContinental Dublin, with The Harbour Masters House celebrating alongside businesses from across Ireland’s food and hospitality industry.

History Post: WALSH ISLAND NYPD OFFICER KILLED IN LINE OF DUTY

Edward Kavanagh, a native of Walsh Island, Co. Offaly, was just 31 when he was shot and killed while serving with the NYPD in Brooklyn in 1907.

Almost 120 years later, his name remains inscribed on the NYPD Memorial in New York, while his grave at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn was recently visited as part of research into his remarkable story.

Offaly B&B shortlisted for national award

The Harbour Masters House in Shannon Harbour has been shortlisted for the Georgina Campbell Irish Food & Hospitality Awards.

The historic B&B overlooks the Grand Canal and dates back to the early 19th century.

The team said they were “absolutely thrilled” with the recognition.

Fuel prices were already high, now they’re climbing sharply again.

Motorists across Offaly have been dealing with high petrol and diesel prices for some time, but the latest increases are pushing costs sharply higher again, with diesel now well above €2 per litre and petrol also crossing the €2 mark in some places, with prices continuing to climb.

For people across Offaly who rely on their cars every day for work, school and essential journeys, another sharp rise in fuel costs will be felt quickly.

Newlyweds Shauna and Ryan received a special Garda es**rt this week as traffic restrictions for the National Ploughing Championships made getting to and from their celebrations a little more complicated.

Members of the Roads Policing Unit were on hand to help the couple through the Mucklagh area.
