As a mother and as a Senator, I see every day how harmful the online world can be — from endless scrolling to targeted abuse.

Concerns have been expressed about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots by children amid warnings of inadequate safeguards. Online safety charity CyberSafeKids said young children are being exposed to misinformation, privacy violations and harmful advice and are calling for greater regulation of AI chatbots at EU level.

That’s why I’m determined in my role as Senator to do all I can to strengthen Ireland’s digital protection laws for all, with a particular focus on children.

There is a lot of work to do, and I acknowledge this is not a complete list:

✅ Enhancing the Online Safety & Media Regulation Bill
✅ Mandatory age verification on social platforms
✅ Making parental controls a legal requirement
✅ Establishing a Children’s Digital Safety Commissioner
✅ Bringing forward Catfishing Legislation
✅ AI chatbots and children - misinformation, privacy violations, harmful advice.

We need laws that protect our children, respect our attention, and hold platforms accountable.
It’s how we reclaim focus, protect our wellbeing, and create space for real conversations.

Closing date: 22nd September 2025 at 5.30pm

The Climate Conversations 2025 is now open.

People across the country are invited to have their say on how we can all play our part in securing our sustainable future.

Government, communities, industry and individuals each have a part to play to help Ireland shift to a carbon-neutral future.

We want to hear how we, as a government, can engage, enable and empower people to take action and realise the potential of moving towards carbon neutrality.

An online questionnaire is now open where people can give their views on the harm associated with climate action, their feelings towards climate change, the perceived impact of different climate beneficial actions and, as a nation, how we are performing.
