Information Appeal

Gardaí in Birr are appealing for information following an alleged hit-and-run and assault that occurred in the Birr area near Lidl at approximately 9:30 a.m. yesterday.

The vehicle involved is believed to be a gold Volkswagen Passat.

If you witnessed the incident, have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area, or have any information where this vehicle is, please contact Birr Garda Station 057 9169710. Any information, no matter how minor it may seem, could be of assistance to the investigation.

concern for a dog that has been seen roaming freely on a busy road on the birr road area 🚩 The dog appears to be unattended and is regularly close to moving traffic, which puts it at significant risk of injury. It’s wearing a brown collar, main concern is for the dog’s safety, as well as the safety of road users who may have to brake or swerve to avoid it. We’d all much rather see him safely at home than trying his luck with the traffic.

We have been notified about a silver Hyundai car with Dublin reg 10D 134###.
Male drivers offering repairs etc. Might have roof ladders on board. Do not entertain or let them look around your property as they are usually looking for copper and lead etc). They have been calling to a yard near Killavilla recently and their details reported to the local Garda Station

Gardaí in Laois and Offaly are currently investigating a number of rural house burglaries. While we are actively working to prevent further incidents, we need the continued support and vigilance of local communities.

As we come into the spring months, people naturally spend more time outdoors, working around their homes, farms and gardens. Unfortunately, this can also create opportunities for crime if basic security is overlooked.

In many burglaries, the most commonly stolen items are cash and jewellery, often taken quickly from accessible areas of the home. In fact, one in four burglaries involves entry through an unlocked door or window.

Common vulnerabilities include:
🔓 Doors, windows, gates or sheds left unlocked
🔑 Keys left in vehicles or machinery
🚜 Tools or equipment left unsecured
💍 Cash or jewellery left visible or easily accessible
❌ Property not marked or recorded

Criminals look for the easiest opportunity. If a property appears accessible or unobserved, it is more likely to be targeted.

What you can do today:
✅ Lock doors, windows, gates and sheds
✅ Remove keys from vehicles and machinery
✅ Secure tools and equipment when not in use
✅ Keep cash and jewellery out of sight or in a secure safe
✅ Mark and record property (we recommend the Garda Property App)
✅ Use external lighting and CCTV where appropriate
✅ Report suspicious behaviour promptly

Good habits, neighbour awareness and timely reporting all help to reduce opportunities for crime.
