Tomorrow is the big day for
Well done to Portumna Tidy Towns and all the volunteers and household and businesses around the town who have worked hard this year to enhance the beauty of our town. As we post this message there are volunteers still out weeding and sweeping the street scape.

If you're free tomorrow, then get out and about from 1.30-4pm tomorrow to show your support as the Portumna Tidy Towns bring the judges around.

📢We are delighted to announce that PORTUMNA HAS BEEN NOMINATED TO REPRESENT COUNTY GALWAY IN THE 2026 NATIONAL PRIDE OF PLACE AWARDS.📢
This is a massive honour for Portumna to be the chosen county Galway town for this year's prestigious competition.🙏👍
The Pride of Place national judging panel will arrive in Portumna on Monday, August 31st. We will be hosting the judges on the day and they will go on an official tour of our beautiful town from approx 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm.
To ensure Portumna looks its best, we are asking for everyone's help to make a lasting impression that will gain valuable points from the judges.🤞😁
We are also kindly reaching out to house owners, business/building owners, estate residents, owners of derelict buildings & community/sports groups.🙏💕
A few examples of works that would help are.....Painting, weeding, planting of flowers, sweeping outside shop fronts, paths, removing litter, clearing overgrown yards, gardens and entrances.

Protect Portumna Forest Park and enjoy this beautiful natural resource on the shores of Lough Derg. Looking forward to working collaboratively with Coillte to build a sustainable and biodiversity focused management plan for our towns forest park and most importantly to get proper toilet facilities. The community survey spelt out the number 1 ask of 1000+ respondants.

Delighted to have been contacted by Emma Smith Local Democracy Galway Journalist of the Irish Independent. We look forward to working with Coillte and their Portumna Forest Park partners like Fáilte Ireland and Galway County Council to action the top asks from our community survey i.e. upgrades toilet facilities, expanded wildlife habitats, more benches and seating area (to name but a few). There are so many great ideas that the 1095 community respondents shared when completing the community survey and we welcome working collaboratively and in partnership with Coillte and other users of Portumna Forest Park.

After the masterplan for Portumna Forest Park, in County Galway was formally scrapped by Coillte earlier this month, locals are now pushing for small – but vital – upgrades as they highlighted the park’s importance and potential.

There's a call for state-agency Coillte to re-engage with the local community on the future of Portumna Forest Park.

Coillte have announced that they will not proceed with their proposed development plan for Portumna Forest Park. They will instead be focusing on damage repair, maintenance and safety following the impact of Storm Eowyn.

Well done to the Protect Portumna Forest Park group who represented community concerns in relation to this development and undertook extensive community engagement in relation to the future of the park.

Their community survey showed strong support for improved toilet facilities, signage, seating and other improvements while also protecting and enhancing the park’s natural and recreational value.

These modest improvements being called for by the community can and should go ahead. I have urged Coillte to re-engage with the local community and local stakeholders to ensure that these improvements can be made to enhance the experience for all who visit this wonderful local amenity.
