MEET THE COMMITTEE:
Hi folks!
My name is Daniel. I’m the PRO and one of the founding members of the Midland’s Adventurers Guild. I’m a former broadcast Journalist who has recently become a very civil servant. I have a wonderful daughter called Ava, a lovely puppy named Bandit and I'm married to the love of my life Lyndsay.
When a handful of strangers met in the Bottleneck Bar two years ago to discuss playing DnD, no one could have believed where it would lead. It has been one of the most fun projects of my life to be a part of, and I’m so grateful to have met such wonderful people along the way.
**What are your hopes for this Community**
I want to see it grow so that other people can experience the same positive effects that have made such a huge difference to my life. I’m a Longford native originally and moved home in 2020 following a decade in Galway. Most of my friends had emigrated or lived across the country at this point so I had no real support network or friend group at home.
On meeting a group of ‘underprivileged Idiots’ one January evening in 2024, I unlocked a group of close friends for life that has been growing ever since.
This group has introduced me to TTRPGs, instructed me, helped me gain confidence to DM, gave me a support network and in general, just made me a happier person.
I want to see the group offer the same to other members and show them the joy of these wonderful games and shared narratives.
As we organise more and more and gain access to funding and collaborations, I want to see the group and the hobby in general become a mainstay of the Midlands.
**How you got into TTRPGs**
I grew up playing video games, with a passion for games with great stories. While I was always aware of DnD, my knowledge of it was the stereotypical image you see in lots of tv shows and movies.
After watching The Legend of Vox Machina on TV, I started seeing lots of clips of Critical Role Sessions on Tik Tok and Insta. I was fascinated by the mechanics and shared storytelling.
I played two online One-Shot sessions with the different Irish TTRPG groups and had an absolute blast! I was hooked.
Then began the search for something in person and somewhat local. A few posts on Irish TTRPG pages got me nowhere until one day I spotted a similar post from someone in South Leitrim looking for the exact same as myself.
That post ended up snaring the majority of the founding members who agreed to meet for a pint to discuss the possibility of playing regularly. From that little acorn of a meeting, a large community began to grow.
While I was very new to the system and the roleplay, I quckly fell in love with the story telling element. Shout out to Eoin our first DM who brought us through a 2 year campaign of hijinks, chaos and so so many laughs.
Playing for a few months and the general support of my new friends got me to step up and try DMing. Another passion was discovered!
Since meeting in the Bottleneck Bar in January 2024, rarely has a week gone by that I have not rolled some dice and more than likely failed a stealth check.
**What and who do you play?**
As I mentioned I just finished a two year campaign as a Dano Cordova, a half Elf swashbuckler Rogue who was considered, in his eyes, to be the 7th best private investigator in Faerun. (He made it to number 6 when Number 3 died of old age).
He was a wonderful character to start my journey with. What began as a fairly 2 dimensional character quickly became the source of so many laughs as this stealthy, acrobatic and charming Rouge repeatedly failed to hide, jump and flirt…sometimes all at once.
His failures in skill checks created a wonderfully silly character that I will love forever.
My next character is heading into the Curse of Strahd as a Reverse Satyr Heavy Metal Bard (Goat Head, Human Bottom Half) so l’m looking forward to the trauma.
I also run a youth Campaign with the wonderful Attic House Youth Group in Longford Town. We’re just about to start bringing a new group of teens through an intro campaign.
Apart from that, I’m in the middle of running the three part starter set for the Fallout TTRPG for two tables and I’m having an absolute ball with it.
**What is your standout TTRPG moment?**
Oh man, where to start? I’ll give you a few little snap shots:
Having to be physically forced into engaging with the backstory I provided the DM because I kept missing the hooks. (Sorry Eoin)
Constantly trying to do cool Rogue moves or flourishes to have the dice say no.. with generally hilarious consequences.
Almost TPKing everyone by using a Temu quality Wish spell to get out of a magical NDA.
Several moments where my youth players realised the story twist and lost their minds in reaction. Job done!
The same kids cosplaying as their characters from my campaign at different events. 🥹🥹
The smiles, laughs and cries of dismay from players as you create a story for them.
I will have many more moments to come and can’t wait to introduce the wonderful world of TTRPPGs to my own daughter as she grows.
PS. Just to put it on the record. Despite what you may hear in the group, no I am not an arsonist. I’ve never been charged.
