It’s been two decades of celebrating the incredible contribution of African communities to Limerick City.

From food and sport to music and culture, our city is richer because of the people of African descent who call Limerick home.

Now more than ever, when many are trying to drive a wedge between our communities, it is important that we come together – as friends, colleagues, neighbours and communities – celebrating our different traditions while recognising our shared humanity.

People from Africa and of African descent are welcome here in Limerick and across Ireland.

Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate Africa Day together at the People’s Park last Saturday.

We are appalled and deeply shocked by the scenes witnessed on Friday in Dublin involving the violent treatment of Yves Sakila by security personnel, and by his tragic death shortly afterwards.

Those scenes evoke memories of the killings of George Floyd in the US and George Nkencho in Ireland, and are undeniably borne of a system that dehumanises Black and Brown people.

We cannot allow Ireland to become a country in which this is tolerated.

What we have witnessed occurred in a wider context where politicians and public figures have made reckless racist and inflammatory comments that scapegoat minorities, asylum seekers, and people of African descent for policy failures.

Such rhetoric fosters an environment in which hostility, discrimination, and violence against people perceived as “different” have become normalised and even justified.

We welcome the prompt referral of this incident to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, for investigation, and urge that all those involved are held fully accountable for any inhumane or unlawful actions.

We extend our deepest condolences to Yves Sakila’s family and to the Congolese community in Ireland.

We stand with you at this time of deep grief and injustice.

If you have been a victim of racism, hate crime or discrimination, Doras is here for you.

Today, for the 3rd year in a row, a bunch of kind-hearted, fun-loving, weather-braving Doras supporters are hiking together to raise funds for our work with refugees and migrants.

Despite the political climate (and the actual climate) these brave hikers are taking on Galtymore this drizzly Saturday morning, and possibly the even harder task of fundraising for a migrant rights charity.

Our hikers, some as young as 13, will climb nearly 1,000m in solidarity with people on the move.

If you can afford to, please consider donating to our fundraiser and showing solidarity not just with the 19 people facing the challenging mountain today, but also with the families and individuals who have had to leave behind their homes, loved ones, and livelihoods, and who are now trying to build a life here while facing many challenges along the way.

Every euro raised will go directly towards our work supporting people with education, employment, immigration, overcoming discrimination and hate crimes, and so much more.

Thank you so much for the support, and best of luck to all our hikers taking on the The Galtees today 💚

Doras is in Budapest!🇭🇺 It’s the 5th international meeting of the H:ouse - Housing: to Overcome Unstable Situation in Europe Project, alongside our European partners.

Over the past days, partners have shared the activities, achievements and learnings from each participating country, including educational resources for communities, training programmes, and housing supports for refugees.

We also reflected on how to strengthen the involvement of new and diverse stakeholders, including private actors, to expand the impact of the project across Europe.

Together we are exploring how Community Sponsorship initiatives can be promoted as new pathways for protection and inclusion in European countries where these programmes have not yet been implemented.
