Last summer, with support from the Greystones Municipal District team, volunteers from Greystones Tidy Towns carried out monthly wildflower surveys on the uncut roadside verges along Charlesland Road. Using 50 ร— 50 cm quadrats (adapted from FIT count squares) at consistent survey locations, they monitored plant diversity throughout the season and recorded 62 native plant species across the summer.
This afternoon some of our volunteers returned, carrying out a limited survey in the area and even in this small window of time were able to record 56 individual native species, including Bee Orchids and Pyramidal Orchids, currently thriving in our verges.
The findings confirm that these verges now function as a valuable urban biodiversity corridor, supporting pollinators and rare plant species and providing significantly greater ecological value than conventionally mown grassland.
