Movember is here: Let’s talk about Prostate Cancer in Ireland 🧔🏻‍♂️💙

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in males in Ireland. About 4,500 men are diagnosed across the country each year, meaning 1 in 6 Irish men will be affected during their lifetime.
Because Ireland currently has no national prostate cancer screening programme, taking the initiative to speak with your GP is essential.

The good news is that when caught early, outcomes are excellent, with a 94% five-year survival rate for men diagnosed in Ireland. (Source: Prostate Cancer Ireland)

⚠️ Key Symptoms to Watch For:
• Needing to p*e more often, especially getting up during the night
• Difficulty starting or a weak flow
• Blood in your urine or semen (talk to a doctor without delay)
• Unexplained back pain or bone pain

🔬 Who is at higher risk?
• Men over 50 (most cases occur in this age group)
• Men with a family history of prostate cancer

This November, check in on the men in your life. If you have concerns, symptoms, or simply want to understand your PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing options, book that GP appointment.

It is a simple blood test, but it starts with a conversation.

🏃‍♀️ Massive thanks to the incredible Glauce! ✨💚

A huge, heartfelt thank you to Glauce for bringing such phenomenal energy and commitment to this year's VHI Women’s Mini Marathon!

Thanks to her hard work, training, and the generosity of her supporters, Glauce raised an astounding €555 for Greystones Cancer Support! 👏

Taking on a challenge like this is no small feat, and we are so grateful for her dedication. Every single euro raised goes directly toward providing confidential support, specialized therapies, and volunteer hospital transport for individuals and families in our community navigating a cancer journey.

Well done, Glauce, and thank you for going the distance for GCS! You are an absolute superstar! 🌟👟

A massive thank you to Terry at High Tide Studios (https://hightidestudios.ie) for hosting Sharon on the "Voices of Greystones" podcast. We are incredibly grateful to Sharon for sharing her inspiring journey with such honesty and warmth.

During her interview, Sharon beautifully highlighted the day-to-day impact of the services Greystones Cancer Support has been providing to the community for 30 years. We are so proud to support our members by:

* Providing a dedicated volunteer transport service for lifts to and from chemotherapy treatments at hospitals like St. Vincent's.
�
* Relieving the logistical and financial pressure on families by taking care of the driving and covering hospital parking. ���
* Offering vital holistic and emotional support, including counseling and reiki. ���
We also want to say a huge thank you to Sharon for her phenomenal fundraising efforts. To give back to the charity, Sharon has organized the upcoming "Pink Ball," which will take place on Saturday, 6th of March 2027!

🎵 Anne Twohig
Anne has been a wonderful part of our singing group, Cana Le Chéile, and kindly stepped up to volunteer her services to oversee our Members' Newsletter. Put simply, the newsletter just could not happen without the hard work, help, and support that Anne provides. Thank you, Anne, from all of us and our members!

🚗 Maurice Carey
Maurice is one of our 29 incredible Volunteer Drivers who make up the absolute backbone of GCS. Being a volunteer driver for a cancer support charity is about so much more than just providing a lift to a hospital appointment. It is about offering a safe, calm space, a friendly ear, and a reassuring, steady presence during what can be a very exhausting and anxious time for our clients. The driving service is a lifeline for so many, and we simply couldn't operate it without the kindness and reliability of Maurice and the rest of the driving team.
To John, Liz, Anne, Maurice, and all of our wonderful volunteers. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are the true heart of Greystones Cancer Support! 💚

🎶 Catch Brian and the Canadh Le Chéile singing group at Wicklow Sings for Health! 🎶

Something special is happening in County Wicklow. This World Singing Day, local singing for health groups are coming together for the very first time, and you're invited to be part of it!

Join us for a relaxed, informal, and inclusive morning. Groups will share songs and stories from their own communities, and everyone is welcome to simply listen or sing along. Friends, family, carers, and guests are all warmly invited to help kick off this new community movement.

🎉 Huge congratulations and a massive THANK YOU to The Plaza Market, Greystones! 🌟

We are absolutely thrilled to see our brilliant local Plaza Market thriving and successfully turning a profit. But what makes this milestone even more special is their incredible generosity in immediately giving back to the community!

The Plaza Market team has donated a phenomenal €12,000 to local charities. Splitting it with €6,000 for Wicklow Hospice and €6,000 for Greystones Cancer Support. 💚🤝

To receive such a substantial donation is absolutely wonderful. This €6,000 will go directly toward funding our vital services, including confidential support, specialised therapies, and our volunteer hospital transport for local individuals and families facing a cancer journey. We are also absolutely delighted to see our wonderful friends at Wicklow Hospice benefiting from this amazing initiative.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - GO PINK🌸

Did you know that about one-third of breast cancers in Ireland are diagnosed through screening women who have absolutely no symptoms? Early detection is your greatest defence.

If you are aged 50 to 69 in Ireland, you are eligible for a FREE mammogram every two years through BreastCheck, the national screening programme. Screening looks for early signs that are too small to see or feel, which is when treatment is usually much easier and more effective.

What you can do today:

✅ Check the register: Ensure your address and details are up to date so your invitation reaches you. You can check your status or register online on the HSE website, or by simply calling Freephone 1800 45 45 55.
✅ Know your normal: Screening is vital, but breast cancer can develop at any age and even between scheduled screenings. Get to know what is normal for you and check your breasts, armpits, and up to your collarbone regularly.
✅ Don't delay: If you notice a new lump, skin puckering, ni**le changes, or unusual discharge, contact your GP immediately even if you have recently had a clear mammogram.
