🎗️⚖️ Men’s Health Week: Connecting Weight & Bowel Cancer Risk

This Men’s Health Week (15th–21st June), the HSE and Men’s Health Forum in Ireland are focusing on this year's theme: "One Step at a Time – Progress, Not Perfection." 👣

Did you know that carrying extra body weight is a major, preventable risk factor for bowel cancer? Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in Ireland, but making small, manageable changes to our weight and diet can significantly lower that risk.

You don't need a grueling gym routine or a restrictive diet to make a difference. Protect your health by picking just one simple step this week:

* 🍏 Add more fibre: Swapping to whole grains (like brown bread or oats) and adding an extra handful of veg to your dinner supports a healthy weight and directly protects your digestive system.
* 🚶‍♂️ Move for 10 minutes: A brisk 10-minute walk on your lunch break helps manage weight, boosts energy, and stimulates bowel health.
* 🩺 Don't delay a check: Be aware of changes in your bowel habits, blood, or unexplained weight loss. If you are eligible for the HSE BowelScreen programme, make sure to complete and return your home test kit when it arrives.
*
Forget perfection. Focus on making one small progress step for your health today. What’s your step going to be? 👇

📅 International Men’s Health Week 2026 (Monday 15th – Sunday 21st June) is officially here.

This year, the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland (MHFI) and the HSE are focusing on a vital message: "One Step at a Time – Progress, Not Perfection." 👣

When it comes to the men and boys in our lives, one of the most critical steps we can take is opening up the conversation around cancer.

📊 The Reality: Cancer Statistics for Men in Ireland
The latest data from the National Cancer Registry Ireland (NCRI) and the Irish Cancer Society highlights why targeted action is so important:
* 1 in 3 men in Ireland will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime.
* Over 12,900 Irish men are diagnosed with an invasive cancer every single year. Marie Keating Foundation
* Men in Ireland experience a 17% higher rate of premature death from cancer compared to women, often because symptoms are ignored or checked too late.
* The Good News: 9 in 10 men survive prostate and testicular cancers when they are caught early. Early detection changes everything.

👣 Take "One Step" This Week
Improving your health doesn’t mean a complete life overhaul by tomorrow. It’s about progress, not perfection. This week, pick just one simple action:

Get it checked: If there’s a lump, a changing mole, or a symptom you’ve been ignoring for weeks, call your GP.

Lower the risk: Around 40% of cancers can be prevented. Take a step like reducing alcohol, quitting smoking, or wearing SPF.
Start the chat: Ask the men in your life—your dad, son, brother, or mate—how they are really doing, and encourage them to put their health first.

Small steps taken consistently make a massive difference. What’s your first step going to be? 👇

A masterpiece of community support! 🎨🕊️💖

We had the absolute pleasure of welcoming the wonderful Greystones Arts Group this evening. The lovely Breda, Mary, Maureen, and Anita stopped by to present us with an incredible cheque for €2,275!

This fantastic total is the result of their beautiful talent and hard work—specifically from the sale of their stunning bird paintings, alongside the generous donations collected in our donation boxes.

A massive THANK YOU to the talented artists of the Greystones Arts Group, and to every single person who bought a painting or dropped some change into a collection box. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us.

This funding will go directly toward maintaining our vital services—from counselling support to patient transport, and everything in between—ensuring local individuals and families never have to face a cancer journey alone.

Thank you all for turning art into such incredible care! 🎨❤️💙💜

🎗️ European Week Against Cancer 2026 🎗️

Every year between the 25th and 31st May, the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) hosts to raise vital awareness about cancer prevention, detection, and care.

The reality is stark: cancer claimed an estimated 1.3 million lives in Europe in 2022 alone, making it the leading cause of death for people under 65. But together, we can reverse this trend. 💪

Here is the truth we need to confront: Where you live should not determine your risk of cancer or your chances of surviving it. Cancer affects everyone, but deeply rooted inequalities mean that prevention, early diagnosis, and high-quality treatment are not equally accessible to all Europeans.

This European Week Against Cancer, join our call to end inequalities in access to prevention, early detection,
treatment, and care for everyone, NO MATTER THEIR POSTCODE. 🇪🇺❤️

An extraordinary tribute to a missed friend. 🤍🏃‍♂️✨

We want to extend our deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to Scruffs Army—the wonderful friends of the late Lee McGuirk, along with his mum Laura and sister Amy.

This inspiring group took on the grueling challenge of the Wicklow Half Marathon in loving memory of their close friend, Lee. Not only did they cross the finish line, but they absolutely smashed their fundraising target, raising an incredible €6,293 for Greystones Cancer Support! 🏁🌟

We are completely blown away by their dedication, grit, and the beautiful way they have honoured Lee's memory.

To every single person who donated, cheered them on from the sidelines, or sent words of encouragement—thank you. These funds will go directly toward providing vital support services to local individuals and families navigating a cancer journey.

Lee’s legacy lives on through the powerful kindness of his family and friends. Scruffs Army, you are absolute heroes. Thank you for standing with us. 🕊️❤️💙💜
