🎀 Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Working Together to Make a Difference 💗
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, NECRET would like to acknowledge the wonderful work being done across our community to promote cancer awareness, education, early detection and support for patients and families.
Earlier this month, our friends at the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre hosted a very successful Breast Cancer Awareness Public Talk on 13th October, bringing together medical expertise, patient advocacy and practical information.
We were delighted that Prof Reem Salman, Consultant Breast Surgeon and NECRET Director, was among the speakers, discussing “What is my risk of breast cancer and how do I reduce it?”
Prof Salman was joined by Ciara Mohan-Gustafson, breast cancer patient and clinical research advocate, who highlighted the distinct challenges of invasive lobular breast cancer and the importance of research, education and ensuring patients' voices are heard.
Sonya Carr, Cancer Awareness Coordinator/Nurse, also provided an informative practical demonstration on breast awareness, helping attendees understand how to recognise changes and when to seek medical advice.
đź’— A particularly important message from Ciara was the power of community support in advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes.
As Ciara so thoughtfully expressed:
"Behind every fundraiser is a purpose, behind every research initiative is the potential for progress, and behind every advance in cancer care are people and families hoping for a better future."
These words capture so much of what drives NECRET and the many wonderful people who support our work, including through initiatives such as the Dip in the Nip.
Our sincere thanks to Ciara Mohan-Gustafson for her continued commitment to cancer awareness and patient advocacy, to Prof Reem Salman and Sonya Carr for sharing their expertise, and to everyone at the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre for organising and hosting such an important evening.
At NECRET, we firmly believe that collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, patient advocates, cancer support organisations and the wider community is essential to improving cancer care and outcomes.
Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month ends today, the importance of awareness, early detection, research and supporting one another continues throughout the year.
