Good water again on River Glen at Slieve League Anglers - River Glen and Abhainn Bhui Wednesday 2nd September 2026.

The River has finally got a good lift and this flood could be the last chance to catch a Salmon for this season - We had a good August with plenty of water and good luck to those that did well. It's been a great early summer run as well, no water for ten days of it - and the rivers full of Salmon that has been reported as the best run once again this year. Sadly, the heavy hand of a state agency IFI implementing a compulsory catch and release policy for September on the Abhainn Bhui - is interfering and completely unnecessary if they knew their business. A voluntary catch and release would have had the same effect maintaining the same attraction as already applied. Sadly, this will deter the visitor Anglers that had another month normally. It would have been far better to let the Angler have the choice - that would have made the difference.
It’s the small accommodation and shops and bars that will feel the drop in spending visitors as a result.

Another small lift in water but not really enough to declare it fishable yet. Will keep you posted.

Hard to believe it is over a year on 21st August 2025 since our founding SLAA Chairman left us. Gerry Breslin was first and foremost the Principal of what is now Coláiste na Carraige but also avid angler who enjoyed his fishing for salmon and seatrout mostly on the Glen and Abhainn Bhui rivers and lakes. He founded our club in 1986 along with his teaching colleague Tony O’ Malley and a small group of interested local members who set up to acquire the title which Gael Linn owned but had allowed to fall into neglect. Thankfully, the evasive title was eventually found and taken over in the unforgettable year of 1992 when Sam visited Carrick for the first time. The club fishery progressed from those small beginnings to operating in a professional way for to welcome the many angling tourists who enjoy the rivers annually. Cois Abhna, started out as an anglers gravelly pathway, was initiated by Mary Patricia Cunningham in Club na nOg in 1995, and Gerry and the Tech students completed small term projects to what has now become the main village attraction for walkers down to the SLAA anglers footbridge and Salmon Leap in 1997.
Bridie RIP, Gerry’s wife, added her floral touches annually to Cois Abhna and she has her own special commemorative stone at the gate for all to remember her. Every year there is an additional riverbank project to enhance our lovely fishery and to try and keep it as a sustainable fishing experience despite the environmental challenges that we have overcame and still encounter every season.
Míle Buiochas agus Suaimhneas síorai Gerry.

Not much rain last night despite heavy flash flooding down Kerry way, but enough to make a good difference to lift the water on River Glen. No change yet on Yellow river but the Glen will have fish running today with this kind of water. Enjoy.

Not as much as a drop in the rise yet. Hoping the rain from the south of the country catches up with us tomorrow.
