Leghowney Community Hall

Following a meeting with Susan Cleary, Regional Youth Officer for Foroige Donegal, the prospect of starting up a Foroige Club at Leghowney Hall has arisen.

It is aimed to first start with a senior club for children aged 12 to 17. If the senior club is successful and sustainable it is planned to expand the club to other age groups in accordance with the Foroige protocols.
We wish to gauge the interest in the community to this idea. Please Like and reply to this post if you are a teenager who would be interested in joining the new club or a parent that would be interested in being a club leader.

Based on the responses here over the next two weeks, we intend to have a meeting in the Leghowney Hall, on Wednesday 4th November at 8pm, for anyone willing to put their name forward as a leader. Susan will be in attendance to provide guidance on starting the club. All volunteers will be asked to supply ID on the night to progress with Garda vetting to become a leader.

Hooley in the Hall this Wednesday 14th of October 8.30 - 10.30pm

The next Hooley in Leghowney Hall is on next Wednesday 14th of October 8.30-10.30. Music by Michael Cleary and Jacqi Bannon.
Funds raised on the night will go to Letterkenny Rehab Unit. Come along for a great night of music, dancing, good company and that yummy supper, all for €10.

The final performance of Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa presented by Donegal Drama Circle takes to the stage in Leghowney Hall tonight Saturday the 10th at 7pm. Admission €15 at the Door. Cash only.

Dancing at Lughnasa is one of Brian Friel’s most endearing and popular plays. Set in 1936 rural Donegal, it gives us a snapshot into the lives of the writers childhood. Told through the narrators voice of the now grown-up young Michael, we meet the five Munday sisters with Kate the National school teacher and matriarch of the family who tries to keep house and home going, whilst guarding the sisters morals for fear of public scrutiny.

Christina is Michael's mum who had her son out of wedlock, not easy in 1930’s rural Ireland. Charming yet unreliable Gerry Evans, Micheal’s daddy turns up occasionally and unexpectantly, causing chaos and stealing the heart of Christina and some of her sisters all over again. Maggie Munday is the even keel in the house, she is Kate’s sounding board, the peacemaker when trouble erupts. Agnes a strong kind lady who works so hard to keep the household going but who manages to find her voice when needed. She is closest to wee Rosie the youngest of the five Munday sisters who’s innocent nature needs minding from the pagan activity in the Back Hills. The sisters only brother Fr Jack has just returned to live with them following a lifetime among the tribes of Africa. Kate is trying to navigate Jack’s spirituality, imported from Uganda while holding on to her job as teacher in the parish.

This is a nostalgic tale which resonates with so many of us, the fleeting flash of a summer and a child’s memories which can be gone with the Autumn wind.
