In the past we were adopters ourselves and our beloved hounds are an important part of our lives. Due to the joy they give us we decided to form a group to help and to rescue other unwanted hounds. Now we are working hard to change that hope into a reality for the other great hounds in Ireland. That is how we became a greyhounds and lurchers rescue and rehoming group. Our organization was establis

hed first in Czech republic and then in Ireland, and it is unwanted greyhounds and lurchers in Ireland we focus on to rescue and rehabilitate and search out and find new homes for. Our team are people in Ireland, Czech, Germany and Slovenia working together.

BIG NEWS !!!

Today, 10th June 2026, we finally were able to sign the contract to purchase the property where we have our kennels and which we have rented for the past 11 years.
In 2025 our lease was up and under the terms of that lease we could now either purchase the property or have to relocate to somewhere else.
Massive fundraising campaigns were organised significantly by 2 German organisations. Windhund Netzwerk noticed us first and decided to help us and the were able to get a much larger organisation VETO Tierschutz to take us under their wing.
Our friends in Hrtji Svet Slovenie and GREY2K WORLDWIDE were also major contributors to our cause.
Other organisations such a Chrti v Nouzi and Greyhound Forever E.V. also contributed as did you, our supporters in Ireland and elsewhere.
GofundMe campaigns, VHI marathons, street collections all added to enable us to achieve our target goal.
This was when we learned that it is not just about money. Bureaucracy said no. We as Great Hounds in Need are an association and so could not own property. We had to set up a company limited by guarantee and then get charitable status before we could proceed.
On August 12th 2025 Great Hounds in Need Ireland C.L.G came into existence and after much interaction with the Charity Regulator we finally got Charitable status. CRN 20207010 on 18th March 2026. Since then we have actually been waiting for the owners to complete their documents, and finally we are here.
A wonderful day for GHIN. Yes, we are also legally registered to trade as GHIN

Well now this was not something we had planned for.
On Friday night, 5th/6th June, there was a horrible night of rain and wind and a massive bough from the old chestnut tree decided it had enough of this Irish weather.
It fell and took out our power and telephone lines. Thankfully it missed the van, though not my much - we were lucky there.
Unfortunately it had other intentions for our brand new roof, which was only finished a week and a half ago. It could have been much much worse and only some bits of guttering need repairing
AND - a branch has speared through the new tile. We will have to wait and see how this can be fixed, and the cost to do it too. We have almost depleted all our money getting the new roofing done at a huge cost and are just feeling a bit drained by all this.
Anyway - this was one of our updates - other updates will be better ones.

Hi all - we have collection permits for this coming

Friday and Saturday, 29th and 30th May, in Clonmel, Co Tipperary.

We are appealing for some volunteers who could help spread around the town with our buckets and help us with the collections as we need to try and maximize our presence. We have missed out on so many collections over the past few months due to not having anyone to mind the kennels and so we really do need to have positive fundraising happen.

We also have permits for

Dungarvan and Tramore for Fri, Sat and Sun 5th, 6th and 7th June

and would appeal to anyone in those areas who may be able to help there also please.
Our funds are almost depleted after getting the upgrades done.
Thank you all in advance

As well as the roofs, we are totally revamping our lurchers lounge/kennels. Tiles on floor (half done) and now walls insulated and lined with hygenic sheeting. Work still in progress but we have our very first occupant in the new part. Fia 🥰

I'm sitting here now after letting the dogs back into their own kennels for the night, looking at all the changes. It's hard to believe that this all started only 10 days ago.
Not finished yet but wow, what a change and improvement.
Feeling a little bit proud to be honest and thankful for you our supporters because without you none of this could happen. Looking forward to it all being finished.

Tuesday 19th May and you get an idea of the organized chaos that is here. The dogs can't run around while the work is going on so they get out early, before the workers arrive and then again in the evenings once the workers have left for the day. In between those hours we bring them out on their leads .
Long days, but worth it for the final results.

Monday 18th May and there is a hive of activity going on. Marek, who finished the tiling for us a while back, is busy stud-walling that kennel block and insulating the walls also prior to fitting the hygenic sheeting for the perfect finish.

The roofers have mainly finished the main house and now have moved on to the second building. It will be some change in just a few more weeks, one we really look forward to.

Happening now!!!
We have started to get new roofs for the kennels and house attached to improve the lives for our dogs and volunteers too. Badly needed...
We had wanted it done last year but hey, we finally found someone who would do the job for us and turn up when they said.
It is very expensive so if anyone feels that they can support us financially we would be most thankful.
