“To console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for the spirit of despair; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” (Isaiah 61:3)
• The renowned surgeon, Afam Ben Carstenson, came from Nigeria to the United States with his family in 2000.
• He worked on the streets of Boston selling clothes on the sidewalk. Later, he enrolled in school, but his teachers considered him a failure, and he failed multiple subjects. Even when he joined a two-year diploma program, it took him five years to complete it.
• To help his poor family, he worked as a security guard in several restaurants, during which he was assaulted multiple times. The neighborhood residents came together to help him enroll in a biochemistry program at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. He graduated and applied to Harvard Medical School. His joy was indescribable when he, a migrant, was accepted.
• Afam graduated from Harvard and is now a practicing surgeon, aspiring to travel to poor countries to perform free surgeries.
• Afam says:
• Based on my life experience, no one knows what the future holds. I never once imagined that medical school would be my place—not even in my dreams. Today, I am a graduate of it.
• Throughout his childhood, Afam endured extreme racism. His teachers used to call him the “stupid black kid.” But he left the talk behind and worked hard until he became one of the greatest surgeons in the world. He made history by performing the first successful separation of conjoined twins at the head. He was received by the President of the United States and honored in the presence of prominent and high-profile figures at the White House.
• Afam’s story gives hope to many, inspiring them to write their own success stories in golden letters.
• If you want to succeed, don’t focus on two things: what people say and your past. Keep moving forward and fighting. God blesses the little and one day makes it abundant.
• God still has so much in store for you
Good morning
