Winter is coming 🌧️

The winds are already howling across the northwest of Ireland, and winter is knocking on our door. And if there’s one thing we know here in Sligo, it’s that our winters are rarely gentle. 🌧️

For our donkeys, the months ahead can be particularly challenging. Many of the precious souls in our care are older, living with health issues, or carrying the physical and emotional scars of lives marked by neglect and abuse. They depend on us for the extra comfort, warmth, nourishment, and care they need to get through the coldest months of the year.

That means extra feed, warm bedding, cosy blankets, warming lights, joint and pain-support supplements, and little things that bring happiness to their days, like salt licks and toys.

It also means keeping our barns and field shelters safe and weatherproof, maintaining the sanctuary grounds, and continuing the installation of our much-needed new fencing to keep our donkeys safe.

These things may seem small, but when you’re an older donkey facing another long, wet, windy Irish winter, they can make all the difference between simply getting through the day and feeling warm, comfortable, safe, and loved.

Our sanctuary is almost entirely supported by the kindness of people like you. We have just one paid staff member, supported by a wonderful team of volunteers who give so much of their time and hearts to these animals. But love and dedication alone cannot pay for all their needs. The bills keep coming.

Did you know that donkeys have incredible memories and can remember people who were kind to them decades after the fact? They also have huge limbic systems, allowing them to feel human-like emotions. Meaning, it’s very possible for a donkey and a human to be friends! Here are some of our volunteers with their donkeys BFFs.

✨ Third appeal. ✨

First of all, we want to say thank you so much to everyone who has already donated towards our new fencing. 🙏🏽

As you may know, we are almost entirely donation-dependent, which means we always need to be raising funds, even in the smallest amounts.

We have a current campaign to help towards the urgent building of 2.5 km of fencing around a good portion of our land, to help keep our animals, safe and secure.

Anyone who donates €75 (which buys 5m of fencing) or more towards the fencing project will get to name a future rescue donkey! You can choose a name to honor a loved one who has passed, or as a fun gift for that animal lover in your life. 🤗

We also appreciate help with getting the animals through the winter, and that always means extra feed, blankets, and other unanticipated needs.

Happy World Animal Day!

On Tuesday, some of the incredible staff from The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland in Cork came up to Sligo to do a health check (including teeth and hooves) of most of our donkeys, as well as perform some xrays and other tests and treatments as needed. We cannot find the words to express our gratitude for their ongoing support of our little sanctuary. Our volunteers learned so much. It was a wonderful day of laughs and smiles and collaboration between the two teams. Thanks to everyone at both sanctuaries for your ongoing commitment to the welfare of these beautiful animals.
