We will be discussing projects associated with grants from the Tidy Towns and Carlow County Council environmental grants. The next branch talk will take place on Friday 20th November at 8pm in the Tinryland Parish Hall (R93 K264).

Colin Travers of the Wexford Barn Owl Project will introduce the challenges of finding and confirming breeding nightjar in Ireland. Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) is a Red-listed Bird of Conservation Concern in Ireland with little to no confirmed breeding attempts over the last 20 years. The birds migrate here in the summer to nest in open wooded areas with low scrubby vegetation and open ground. Habitats such as heathland and newly planted forestry are attractive to the birds. Colin has worked as a field surveyor and volunteered much of his spare time over the past number of years searching for Nightjar. He was heavily involved in confirming the first known breeding attempt of Nightjar in Ireland in recent times. The talk will focus on the efforts that went into surveying and finding suitable breeding habitat, deploying recording equipment and carrying out dusk surveys to prove breeding.

The branch AGM will be held in advance of the talk at 7.35pm. The committee is seeking new members to keep the branch running smoothly. The current members have served a number of years volunteering time organising and facilitating events.

Drummin Bog Project invites you to "Join us on Sunday 1st November for two activities. The first will be to hear Tas talking about surveying the pond on Drummin Bog. This little pond is very curious!! as it contains plants that indicate both acidic and alkaline conditions. It is also a very miniature model of how a raised bog was originally formed 9,000 years ago! Do join us to hear more!!
Subsequent to the Pond Talk, we hope that you can join us to share your thoughts for potential future plans for Drummin Bog.
2026 is the 10 year anniversary of the formation of the Drummin Bog Project. A good time to pause and review; and with that in mind, we have been working hard behind the scenes with facilitator Chris Chapman to draw up a Future Plan for Drummin Bog.
Many stakeholders have made contributions. We welcome, and would be most grateful, for further notes or ideas that you may like to share with us for the future of this special place.
