The results for the Irish Business Against Litter survey have been released and we would like to pass on our warmest congratulations to Sligo Town for being named Ireland's Cleanest Town! In the nationwide ranking of 40 towns and cities, Sligo secured the top position.

Whilst Ballina has delivered a solid performance in the latest IBAL results, a town with no heavily littered sites and many areas already shining, it did "fall" down the ranks from position #10 to #16. However we know Ballina can do more than “solid”. We can lead. We can inspire. We can set the standard for every town in Ireland.

The report shows exactly where our next victories lie.

Ash Pool and a number of approach roads were just shy of the top grade, within touching distance of excellence. With a small push from residents, neighbours and volunteers, these areas can easily move into the highest category. A few extra hands, a few extra minutes and these routes into our town can become gateways we are proud of.

Pearse Street, the beating heart of Ballina, was praised for its excellent streetscape, but it fell short because of casually discarded litter. Imagine what a difference it would make if every business, every passer‑by, every one of us took ownership of that shared space. A single piece of litter lifted instead of ignored. A shopfront kept that little bit sharper. A moment of pride replacing a moment of carelessness. Pearse Street can be a top‑ranking site and it will be, if we want it to be.

And standing as a model for what Ballina can achieve is the Jackie Clarke Collection which was singled out for individual praise for being a beautifully presented, impeccably maintained and recognised as an amenity of the highest standard. It proves what we already know when Ballina commits to something, we deliver it with heart, pride and excellence.

Now is the moment to bring that same spirit to every corner of our town. So,

Let’s lift Ash Pool.
Let’s strengthen our approach roads.
Let’s elevate Pearse Street.
Let’s aim for nothing less than a top IBAL ranking in 2027.

This is our town. Our reputation. Our shared responsibility. And together, as volunteers, residents, businesses, schools and community groups, we can make Ballina not just clean, but exceptional. 2027 starts now.

♻️ Never Bin Vapes – Always Recycle for Free! ♻️

Here in Ballina, we all take pride in keeping our town safe, clean, and environmentally responsible. But when vapes and other small electricals with hidden batteries are thrown into household bins, they can get crushed during waste processing — causing dangerous fires in bin trucks and recycling centers.

These fires put waste crews, our community and our environment at risk.

By recycling vapes and all electrical items properly, we:

• Prevent fires and protect front line workers
• Keep Ballina cleaner and safer
• Protect our environment from toxic leaks
• Recover valuable materials like lithium, copper, and plastics
• Reduce carbon emissions by keeping resources in the circular economy
• Support a more sustainable future for Ballina

It’s quick, free and makes a real difference. Never bin electricals, always recycle them safely. Let’s keep Ballina beautiful, responsible and fire‑safe!

Never Bin Batteries – Always Recycle for Free ♻️🔋

Lithium batteries are everywhere - powering our smartphones, laptops, tablets, e-bikes, and more. But did you know they can overheat or even catch fire if not handled properly? Accidents and injuries from lithium batteries are on the rise, so it’s important to use and dispose of them safely.

✅ Top Tips for Lithium Battery Safety

• Choose wisely – Buy from reputable sources and registered suppliers

• Use the right charger – Stick to manufacturer-recommended chargers and batteries

• Follow instructions – Always read and follow the guidelines

• Check for recalls – Stay informed and act quickly if needed

• Charge safely – Monitor devices while charging and unplug when done

• Don’t use damaged batteries – Avoid batteries that are swollen, leaking, or overheating

• Store safely – Keep batteries in a cool, dry place away from children and pets

• Recycle responsibly – Never bin batteries or battery-powered devices—always recycle for free

Recycling batteries and battery powered products helps conserve natural materials, reduce environmental impact, and keep our homes safe.

🐦Gentle reminder about feeding birds in the summer months 🐦

We all love seeing birds in our gardens and many of us enjoy putting out food for them. But during the summer, nature is already providing abundant natural food sources like insects, seeds, berries and everything our feathered friends need to thrive.

When extra food is left out overnight, especially on the ground, it can unintentionally attract rats, who are always on the lookout for an easy meal. Once they find a reliable food source, they tend to return and settle in.

If feeding the birds is something you really enjoy, there are still safe ways to do it:

Use off‑the‑ground feeders that reduce spillage

Bring feeders in each evening

Clean up any fallen food daily

These small steps help protect wildlife, keep our neighbourhoods clean and ensure we’re supporting birds in a way that’s healthy for them and for our community.

Thank you for helping keep our shared spaces safe, tidy and welcoming for everyone, feathered and human alike!
