SHARK MONTH 2026!
Throughout Shark Month, we collected sightings of elasmobranchs while continuing our long-term monitoring through photo identification, BRUV surveys, laser measurement, and roving surveys.
But Shark Month was about more than what we saw underwater.
We worked alongside local dive centres through Unite Gili, contributed sightings to citizen science, deployed BRUVs to observe elasmobranchs in their natural habitat, and stepped beyond the dive sites to learn more about fisheries and bycatch in Tanjung Luar shark market.
Each activity gave us a different piece of the picture, and together, these pieces help us better understand the elasmobranch populations around the Gilis and the challenges they face.
A big thank you to everyone who joined the dives, shared sightings, supported the research, joined our masterclasses, and contributed their time and knowledge throughout Shark Month. Your contribution matters, and we couldn’t do this without you.
Shark Month may be over, but the work continues.
See you underwater for the next one!
