Seven years ago, a simple email landed in our founder Rose’s inbox. It contained news that Rose and her team could hardly believe. Gili Shark Conservation, the organisation Rose co-founded and still leads today, had received an International SeaKeepers Society Asia Achievement Award in recognition of its contribution to marine conservation.
For a small grassroots organisation based on a tiny island in Indonesia, it felt incredibly validating to know that people on the other side of the world saw value in their work. Around that same time, Rose had just watched Chasing Coral and became fascinated by the potential of coral restoration. Inspired by what she had seen, she approached Gail from SeaKeepers Asia with an idea: what if they could start their own coral restoration project in the Gili Islands?
SeaKeepers Asia believed in the vision and helped fund the first 60 hex domes, artificial reef structures that would become the foundation of our coral restoration site. A partnership was born.
A few years later, when Rose had the idea of creating Indonesia’s first all-female coral restoration team, Gail was one of the first people she called. The plan was ambitious. But Gail knew something important: when Rose believes in something, she’s going to try anyway. And thankfully, SeaKeepers Asia continued to believe alongside her and supported her by facilitating knowledge exchange with marine biologists and scientist from Singapore and Malaysia.
Last week, seven years after that first email, Rose and Gail met again in Singapore. Their conversation was a reminder of something we don’t talk about enough in conservation: real change takes time. And grassroots organisations certainly don’t become sustainable overnight.
Long-term support gives organisations like ours the space to learn, adapt, grow, and create lasting impact.
Gail, thank you so much for your friendship, your belief in our work, and for standing beside us through every stage of this journey. And thank you to The International SeaKeepers Society for proving what is possible when funders choose to invest not just in projects, but in people and partnerships. Here’s to the next seven years 🩵
