CEEweb for Biodiversity

CEEweb for Biodiversity Our mission is to help preserve biodiversity, emphasising Central and Eastern Europe.

CEEweb for Biodiversity is an umbrella organisation in Central and Eastern Europe working for the conservation of biodiversity through the promotion of sustainable development. We do so through advocacy, networking with and influencing decision-makers, implementing national and transnational projects, and by carrying out capacity-building and raising awareness activities. Throughout this time, we

have worked in over 20 countries identifying and changing the drivers behind biodiversity loss; forming common policies and actions for the enhancement of biodiversity in Central and Eastern Europe; and promoting the enforcement of international conventions for nature and biodiversity conservation.

Peatlands may cover only a small share of Europe’s land area, but they are the continent’s largest terrestrial carbon store. Yet, nearly half of Europe’s peatlands are degraded, turning many of them from carbon sinks into significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

That is why the Peatland Futures consortium brought peatlands to EUKICON26 – the EUKI - European Climate Initiative Academy Networking Event in Berlin through the workshop Sustainable Peatland Futures.

Through interactive discussions and storytelling exercises, participants reflected on challenges in their own sectors and explored how healthy peatlands can provide solutions through the ecosystem services they offer.

After two and a half years, the Mystical Danube project is reaching its end and, as such, CEEweb for Biodiversity is present in the Closing Conference “Routes connecting people”, held in Bucharest and organised at the Palace of the Parliament.

This opportunity has allowed us to present the “Policy recommendations for sustainable community tourism development with a transnational context,” one of the project’s main outputs, encompassing 9 countries throughout the Danube Region.

Moreover, we are honoured to be here with a representative from Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park ( DINPI ), representing the Ipoly valley, the Börzsöny hills, and the project's Hungarian Pilot Site.

Keep following the project for its final outcomes!

How can regions become more resilient to climate change?

We were pleased to present the results of the BESTbelt project "Increasing the resilience of Lake Fertő in a changing climate" at the DIRECTED project General Assembly, hosted in Hungary.

During the workshop, we shared key lessons learned from the Fertő region, highlighting how hydrological challenges, ecosystem resilience, and stakeholder cooperation are deeply interconnected.

Bringing together experts from different sectors across Europe, the event provided a valuable space to exchange experiences and explore practical approaches to climate adaptation.

This presentation also served to mark the successful completion of the project, implemented with Fertő tó Barátai Egyesület (the Friends of Fertő Lake Association).

CEEweb recently took part in a cross-border dialogue on the future of the Fertő/Neusiedler See region at the Foster Europe event in Neusiedl am See.

Together with Austrian and Hungarian experts, we shared our ongoing work on water management, biodiversity, and landscape resilience, highlighting the need for integrated, transboundary solutions to address the growing challenges posed by climate change and fluctuating water levels in the region.

The event marked an important milestone for the BESTbelt project "Increasing the resilience of Lake Fertő in a changing climate," implemented in close collaboration with Fertő tó Barátai Egyesület (the Friends of Fertő Lake Association).

Strengthening dialogue and cooperation across borders remains essential for building a more resilient future for this unique shared landscape.
