Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens - IIHSA Reflecting the special role of Greece as a key source of our shared European heritage, Athens is a unique centre of international research.

Many European states have their own research Institutes there, some dating back to the 19th century, others like the Irish Institute founded more recently. The Irish Institute, celebrating its twenty year anniversary during 2015-2016, takes its place in this dynamic international setting, supporting Irish-based scholars and students in their research and study, and promoting both Greek and Irish c

ulture. Ireland has a long (but often overlooked) history of involvement in Greece, from early travellers and philhellenes to distinguished classical scholars. In more recent times Irish writers, including our distinguished Patron Seamus Heaney, have continued to find inspiration in Greek ideas and themes. Research into all aspects of Greek culture flourishes in our Universities, and the IIHSA provides a new and national focus for Irish research in Greece. There are already active research programmes in archaeology, focusing primarily on rural culture and landscapes, and in philosophy. Background

The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens (IIHSA) was founded in 1995 and formally recognised by the Greek Ministry of Culture in 1996. In Ireland it is a company limited by guarantee with charity status (CHY 13738). The core aims of the Institute are:
• to establish a distinctive Irish voice in the study of Greece and its culture from earliest times to the present day.
• to promote the mutual understanding of Greek and Irish culture through lectures and other events
• to maintain a permanent office and staff in Athens
• to develop research and study programmes, publications, and ongoing archaeological fieldwork. The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens is a collaboration of the following Irish Universities:

✨Caint agus Cultúr – 3rd Meeting ✨

👉Join us on Saturday, 28 June for another evening of Irish language, culture and music, organised in collaboration with the Greek-Irish Society.

We will begin with our monthly Ciorcal Comhrá (informal Irish-language conversation circle open to all levels), and then, Lambrini Gioti and the Curfá Gaelic/Nordic Choir - Athens,Greece will introduce us to the beautiful tradition of Sean-nós singing, before filling our rooftop with Irish song under the summer night sky.

Last Wednesday, 10 June 2026, we were delighted to host the reception for the 21st International Aegean Conference "NESTOR: Celebrating the Work of Wise Jack Davis", held at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (8-11 June 2026).

A wonderful evening on our rooftop, filled with colleagues and friends, lively conversations, great food, and many memorable moments. We were thrilled to be part of this celebration of Jack's outstanding contribution to Aegean archaeology.

☘ Last Saturday, at the second Caint agus Cultúr meeting at the IIHSA, we had the pleasure of experiencing two wonderful moments. ☘

First, we delved a little deeper into Irish kinship vocabulary under the guidance of the wonderful Ailbhe Mahony from the Greek-Irish Society. Then, we watched the captivating documentary "An Buachaill Geal Gáireach / The Laughing Boy / Το γελαστό παιδί," which took us on a journey through the turbulent Irish and Greek 20th centuries, highlighting the intricate cultural threads connecting the two peoples’ historical experiences.

The evening will begin with our monthly Ciorcal Comhrá (Irish-language conversation circle and informal class) followed by a screening of Alan Gilsenan’s acclaimed trilingual documentary "An Buachaill Geal Gáireach / The Laughing Boy / Το γελαστό παιδί."

Tracing the extraordinary journey of Brendan Behan’s poem from Ireland to Greece, and from literature to political resistance, the film explores the intertwined histories of the two countries through the enduring power of a song.

Last evening, Professor Muiris O’Sullivan took us on a captivating journey through the many lives and afterlives of one of Ireland’s most iconic archaeological sites: the Hill of Tara.

The lecture offered a wonderful conclusion to our 2025–2026 lecture programme and to our “Sharing Irish Heritage” initiative.

A heartfelt thank you to Muiris for such an engaging talk, and to everyone who joined us throughout the evening.

Our sincere thanks also to the Irish Government’s Emigrant Support Programme for making this initiative possible, and to the Embassy of Ireland, Greece, for its continuous support.
