Plenty of colour in the Cottage and Summer Gardens this week and the walled garden building up to its summer colour peak has provided no shortage of images. The dogwoods are still in flower, with Cornus 'Norman Haddon' opposite the lower entrance to the Walled Garden looking especially resplendent.

We're open 10:30 to 7:00 for our Twilight Tuesdays, 10:30 to 4:30 Wednesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays. Dogs are welcome. The cafe is open for cakes and other goodies, and a good selection of seasonal stock is available in the free to enter Plant Sales area to brighten your own gardens.

A pair of unexpected visitors in the garden yesterday, flitting about and feeding on the Nepeta in the Walled Garden lower terrace. This is the Hummingbird Hawk-moth, a summer visitor from Southern Europe. Judging by the loss of hairs on one of their backs it had been in the UK for a while. Difficult to photograph, they move very quickly, hovering briefly in front of the flowers, taking a sip, and then darting away. And their wingbeats are so fast that even fast shutter speeds between 1/1000sec and 2/1000sec leaves them blurry.

Just like hummingbirds.
