💡Back in the late 70s a naughty schoolboy called Jim was sent on an course at Eskdale in the Lake District in the middle of winter. It was a far cry from his council estate home in North London but the experience completely changed the path of his life!

📚In the library of the Eskdale Centre was a book about the 19th century Orcadian, Scottish Explorer, John Rae. Jim was captivated by Rae who initially went out to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company but became a pioneering Arctic explorer who not only discovered the fate of the Franklin Expedition but discovered the North West Passage. Rae’s success in the Arctic was ultimately achieved because he learned all the necessary survival skills from the local Inuit, a reverence that was sadly never observed by the Royal Naval expeditions of the time resulting in tragedy. On his return to England to reveal his grim discoveries Rae was shunned by the British Establishment, a campaign ferociously driven by Lady Franklin and Charles Dickens (that is a story for another day)

🇨🇦Jim has always been a big believer in “doing your homework” and together with his admiration for John Rae this led him to save all his annual leave each year and head to the Inuit community at Resolute Bay, Cornwallis Island, Nunavut to do the same as Rae and learn from the locals how to survive and thrive in a polar environment.

📍Resolute Bay became a home from home for Jim, largely thanks to Ozzie and Aleeasuk and became the Ice Warrior Project training base between 2003-2006.

🎬With the Frozen Planet crew safely ensconced in their valley filming the Arctic wolf pack after 4 weeks with a 40 mile travel limit on the ATV Jim's routine of equipment maintenance, campsite chores and location scouting had become fairly repetitive.
📡AND then like a gift from heaven an emergency call came over the radio🆘

🇫🇷A French scientific camp on the other side of the Sawtooth Mountains, 50 miles away, had been “terrorised by wolves” and were in a bad mental state – lack of sleep, nightmares when they did sleep and abject fear - they wanted out and had requested an emergency evacuation🆘

🚁This was it! Jim was about to get his 007 James Bond moment! Ozzie, Mr Resolute Bay, and good friend of Jim, called in the Canadian Rangers to pick up Jim (the wolf expert) in a helicopter and fly him to the French camp to reassure, placate and properly educate the scientists in all matters Arctic wolf.
By this time Jim had gained a reputation in the local community (Resolute Bay – 200 flying miles to the south) of being the “wolf finder” or so the Inuit called him as they chuckled to themselves and so now they were to putting him to the test🤔

🍽️ After Jim had reassured and taught the 3 scientists that they were not in any danger, if they took just a few precautions, they settled right down and invited him to “dîner”.
🍕And what a supper! Being French they valued food far more than the crew and had a folding oven. They set about making pizza bases, spreading them with passata, fresh onions, garlic and peppers and a wonderful gooey cheese all baked in the red hot oven. After just a few minutes the smell was intoxicating and the eating sublime. 🍷They even had red wine to toast Jim with a hero’s welcome! After a diet of dried food for weeks, Jim was in heaven. 🤣Needless to say Jim felt he should stay for a few days just to make sure the French camp were ok before calling in his helicopter to return to Camp 🇬🇧
N.B. Whilst in the Camp Pizza Express Jim woke startled at 0400 one morning with movement in the tent to find that a gang of lemmings were racing each other underneath the ground sheet - no wonder the wolves like it there!

What’s love got to do with it?? ❤️

🇨🇦🎬 During the Arctic summer of love in 2008 while Jim was looking after a BBC film crew filming wolves for “Frozen Planet” on Ellesmere Island he witnessed the unusual love affair between ’Tina Turner’, a rather aged female musk ox who would stamp her feet at him and show off her qiviut (shaggy mane) and ‘Juan’ a young, terribly handsome male musk ox. Left over from the ice age musk oxen are big hoofed, thick set, shaggy creatures with a choking musky odour.
🥰Tina had her young stud and Juan strutted around exuding his sickly odour like the cat who'd got the cream 💪
It was obvious they were a couple BUT Jim and the crew were left puzzled with 2 burning questions that were never answered 1) WHY were they on their own because usually musk oxen travel as a herd and of course 2) WHY hadn’t the wolves predated upon them and instead left them to their amorous activities⁉️

Concerning stoats!

📍Ellesmere Island, Canada 🇨🇦 2008: whilst working for the Natural History Unit on the ‘Frozen Planet’ production (see previous posts) Jim was waiting for a pack of Arctic wolves to appear whilst sat 10m away from a dry riverbed.

As his eyes drifted away from the wolves he caught a small movement in the river bed……..first one inquisitive stoat……..then another........then another appeared. Having never seen humans they were completely unfazed by his presence. Sadly he didn't have his big lens hence the quality is not fantastic😔

👀Lucy wasn't the only thief in the pack - Mac (named after Jim's son), took a fancy to Jim's .alpine PRO camera bag 📷

🐺Mac was the Alpha male Arctic wolf of the pack and only had to move slightly or flick his ears and the rest of the pack knew what to do. Wolves only make a noise in two circumstances - when communicating over long distances or if there is danger to a female and her wolf cubs.

Let’s talk a bit more about Lucy the Arctic wolf!!

🎬During Jim’s time, in 2008, filming ‘Frozen Planet’ on Ellesmere Island 🇨🇦 he and Lucy became good friends - she would often turn up at camp and pinch bits of kit when she knew he was looking 👀 - rope, buckets and even his jacket!
BUT sometimes Lucy brought him gifts - like this lemming that got a very good ‘wolf’ licking!!

Postscript: Jim lent this very, much loved, jacket to someone and never saw it again! 18 years on he still wishes he had it!😔

📍Near to Bay Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Arctic Canada 🇨🇦
🎬It’s 2008 and Jim is working with the Natural History Unit on 'Frozen Planet' - coffee is a very important drug when you are on a 24 hour vigil waiting for the wolves to come out and start playing.
✅This was the 1st ever filming of a wild Arctic wolf den.
⬆️The den is 1.2 km away on the opposite hill(see arrow)
🌡️The temperatures reached 28°C and the crew ran out of sun cream!
☺️Jim became so friendly with the wolves that he nearly brought 'Lucy' home - it was a wrench to leave her - and to this day he wonders what happened to her💭

Jim has been a busy boy this week.

🎙️The last couple of days, he's hopped onto the frequencies of and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, sharing a few words about his experiences with the big man himself, Sir David Attenborough.

Later this morning he'll be joining South at 1040 hrs as well, if you’re in the area!

A real pleasure to help celebrate such an extraordinary legacy 🌍💚🕊️
