# # # Young People Don't Need a Template

One of the most memorable conversations from our Youth Mental Health Assemblies was about bullying.

But what happened next wasn't something we'd planned.

A group of young people began questioning the way bullying is usually understood.

They recognised that sometimes nobody sets out to be cruel. Something embarrassing happens, others join in, and suddenly one young person can find themselves isolated and hurt.

The group then moved beyond describing the problem.

They started thinking about what could be done **before** situations escalated.

They talked about resilience, emotional awareness and healthy relationships.

Nobody had asked them to write an anti-bullying strategy.

Nobody gave them a template.

Through listening, discussion and deliberation, **they developed the foundations of one themselves.**

This is why we believe meaningful youth participation has to go beyond consultation.

Give young people the right tools, the time to think together and the space to lead β€” and they can come up with solutions that adults might never have anticipated.

Sometimes our job isn't to give young people the answers.

It's to trust them enough to discover their own.

πŸ“£ You're Invited: Sharing Our Ecosystem

Together Creating Communities (TCC) will be holding its AGM on Wednesday 9 September 2026.

Alongside the formal AGM, we'll be running Sharing Our Ecosystem, an interactive workshop developed by the HEAL Collective and recently used at a Justice Together Initiative gathering.

The workshop will help participants:

βœ… Build new relationships
βœ… Share what they're working on
βœ… Discover opportunities for collaboration
βœ… Identify strengths and gaps across our communities
βœ… Help shape the future of community organising in North East Wales

This workshop is suitable whether you're highly active in community organising or simply interested in building stronger connections across our region.
Places are limited.

Community leaders, partners and supporters who would like to attend can request the event link by emailing [email protected].

πŸ”— The event registration is being managed through Luma, and the link will be shared directly by email.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Let's explore how we can build a stronger, more connected and more resilient North East Wales together. 🌱

**What We've Learned: From Our Youth Assemblies #9**

# # # Power Exists in Every Conversation

One of the most interesting reflections from our Youth Mental Health Assemblies came after the discussions had finished.

Our Young Leaders had been trained in facilitation, listening and deliberation. They weren't simply there to take part β€” they were helping to create the spaces where other young people could speak and think together.

At one assembly, there weren't enough trained Young Leaders to facilitate every group, so adults stepped in to support some of the discussions.

The Young Leaders noticed something.

Different facilitators shaped conversations in different ways.

Some adults naturally brought their own professional experiences and perspectives into the discussion.

Nobody had done anything wrong.

But the young people recognised that **power exists in every conversation**.

For us, that was a powerful sign that the training was working.

They weren't just learning how to facilitate.

They were learning to notice how conversations are shaped, to question what they see, and to think critically about whose voices influence the discussion.

That's a vital part of democratic participation.

Because understanding power is the first step towards being able to change it.

This is **What We've Learned: From Our Youth Assemblies #9**.

# # # ARFIDandME | Working With Me, Not For Me

Before Macy began working with TCC, she was already campaigning for change.

She was creating resources, raising awareness, contacting organisations, travelling to London, speaking out about ARFID and trying to find ways to make things better for people experiencing what she had experienced herself.

What she was missing wasn't determination.

It wasn't ideas.

It wasn't a willingness to speak up.

It was someone to help take those ideas further.

That's where Scarlett Williams and TCC came in.

Macy describes the difference very simply:

> β€œI wanted someone to work with me, not for me and not over me.”

From the beginning, Scarlett's role has been to listen to Macy's ideas, take them seriously and help explore what might come next β€” who might need to hear them, who could help, and how an idea could become something practical.

Macy remains at the centre of her own work.

As she puts it:

> β€œShe supports me without making me feel dependent on her.”

And perhaps most importantly:

> β€œShe challenges me to think bigger without taking the work away from me.”

This is an important part of the story behind the ARFIDandME campaign.

At TCC, we believe meaningful change starts with people who are directly affected by an issue having the opportunity to lead it.

Our role is not to take over someone's campaign or speak on their behalf.

It is to come alongside them, help build connections, open doors and support them to turn their ideas into action.

For Macy, that has meant moving from having ideas and campaigning independently to having someone in her corner to help explore what might be possible.

And this is only the beginning.

In the next part of Macy's story, we'll look at how one of those ideas β€” creating a space where people affected by ARFID could have their voices heard β€” became the ARFID Lived Experience Issues Group.

**What We've Learned: From Our Youth Assemblies #8**

# # # Young People See Connections Adults Can Miss

When we set out to listen to young people about mental health and wellbeing, we expected to hear about anxiety, stress and the pressures of everyday life.

We did.

But we also heard about **war, politics, climate change, poverty, bullying, discrimination, housing, social media and the future.**

That shouldn't surprise us.

Young people don't experience mental health in isolation. The world around them affects how they feel, how safe they feel, their sense of belonging and how much control they feel they have over their lives.

What stood out to us was how clearly young people were able to make those connections when given the time and space to think together.

The lesson for us?

Perhaps we need to stop narrowing conversations about young people's mental health and start listening to the **whole picture**.

This is the second post in our **What We've Learned: From Our Youth Assemblies** series.

Next time, we'll look at something the young people noticed that tells us a lot about **power in a conversation**.

**What We've Learned: From Our Youth Assemblies #7**

# # # Young People Already Have a Voice

One of the biggest lessons from our Youth Mental Health Assemblies wasn't about giving young people a voice.

It was recognising that **they already have one.**

Around 200 young people have taken part in assemblies at St Joseph's School and Ysgol Maes Garmon, exploring the issues affecting their mental health and wellbeing.

And they didn't just talk about anxiety or stress.

They talked about war, politics, climate change, poverty, bullying, discrimination, housing, social media and their future.

What became clear is that young people don't see mental health as something separate from the world around them.

They understand the connections.

They understand what affects their wellbeing.

And, when given the space to listen, deliberate and think together, they have plenty to say about what needs to change.

Our role isn't to speak for young people.

It's to create the conditions where their voices can be heard, taken seriously and acted upon.

This is the next chapter of **What We've Learned: From Our Youth Assemblies**.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more of what the young peopleβ€”and the process itselfβ€”have taught us.
