Cases like these are lovely that member's of the public go out of their way to help, but frustrating if they hadn't been able too with no emergency fosters, we still would have had to take the case on, set something up temporarily then plead for a foster.
This kittens are part of the huge colonie we are trying to deal with in Borras.
One single family have created this colonie, from NOT neutering their cats and now the pregnant young cats are migrating to other streets having their babies and then creating new colonies.
Many of you will know that multiple neighbours have contacted others agencies asking to step in.
When we would turn up to the location, we were met with abuse off the family that were refusing to neuter their cats saying they couldn't afford too or take them to the vets. 😤🤬
They said only two of the NOT neutered cats belonged to them and it wasn't their fault all these other cats have been born then continued to keep having litters 😤🤔.
When they knew we was desperately trying to pick off the young kittens/adults and pregnant cats, that THEY said was nothing to do with them they would ring the police.
The police would attend and agree what we was doing was right and legal as not on their land, but because this family was complaining we was asked to move along to keep the peace. This is a complete waste of Police resources and they kept doing it, working the system so we couldn't save the kittens and pregnant cats.
We knew this day would come that we would receive multiple calls about various kitten litters near to this location.
The other day Keiran and his lovely wife Stef contacted us asking for help. Our team also contacted me saying about the case that we didn't know how we could help, with no spaces, but we got too help somehow.
Cases like this frighten me normally, and i have had to walk away from similar cases because the people are only interested in keeping the kittens, despite advice that it is better that they and mum were removed and handled by people with experience.
This case was different Kieran and his wife put me at ease straight away that they wanted the best for mum and kittens. This reassured me, i explained that i would show them everything and if after showing them, they felt out of their depth, we would take them all on.
I managed catch the five kittens again, luckily they were only about 3-5 weeks old so not very mobile, little black boy was bit of a challenge 😳 but soon come around.
Three of the kittens had shocking eyes, serious conjunctivitis, from cat flu. I asked Stef if she could bring out some luke warm water eye pads and ideally we needed antibiotic eye drops, they explained by sheer luck they had cream.
So between us we bathed their eyes and treated them. Mum was still hanging around watching at a Safe distance on her babies. I tired to lure mum into the trap using the smallest kitten after i has fed him, but mum was having non of it.
I explained prior to this if mum couldn't be caught asap these kittens needed to be hand fed. Stef offered to collect kitten formula, i rang Vets Now as we do a lot of work for them, i am lucky all the staff know me so they went out of their way to get a tub of kitten formula and 1ml syringes for Stef to collect.
Once Stef came back i showed them how to hand feed, to show how hard it was and how careful you had to be. I give all the kittens 5ml at first to stabilise them all them Stef and Kieran hand fed them all again in front of me.
To be fair the kittens once use to being fed were text book, even the chunky black boy. I explained it was desperate we caught mum, reunite them so she could stimulate the kittens so they toilet.
I showed them how to toilet the kittens, and explained if they couldn't do this or get mum back to them they die if not be sble to toilet.
I sexed all the kittens explained they needed to be fed hourly at first to stabilise them because we didn't know when mum last fed them and showed them the signs of when the kittens had enough to eat and to stop them in case of inhalation.
I was pleased to hear about hour later mum had been caught in our trap and reunited with her kittens.
I have explained it is important mumis kept with her kittens in a quiet room in a dog crate, covered over so she can feel safe to continue being a mum in peace and quiet.
My advise is if anyone finds kittens. DO NOT DISTURB THEM!! contact a local rescue and to support mum with food and water at distance so she doesn't feel threatened.
I would not advise anyone normally to take the kittens on if no prior experience as it is alot of work, commitment and if no experience and done incorrectly the kittens could die.
I respect Keiran and Stef wanted best for this little family, they are exceptional people but anyone in this situation ideally if no experience please let a rescue step in.
Thank goodness they're safe 😻
