June Meeting: Creswell Crags

June’s meeting took us away from Lady Margaret Hall for our annual off-site visit to Creswell Crags, where we were fortunate to enjoy a beautiful summer evening after a day of thunderstorms.

The evening began with an introduction from Sarah, the Learning Manager, who explained the site’s international significance in Ice Age history, including the fact that the “Creswellian Era” is named after the people who lived there around 13,000–11,800 years ago. The Crags are renowned for their cave art and archaeological discoveries, ranging from flint tools and mammoth bones to carved bone art.

We then split into four groups for a guided walk around the tranquil limestone gorge, meeting staff whose passion for conservation and history brought the site to life.

If you parked at Creswell Crags during our June meeting and provided us with your vehicle registration number, you should have been registered for free parking.

Creswell Crags uses an automated ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system. If your vehicle was not registered correctly—or if we accidentally missed your details—you may receive a parking charge notice from Smart Parking.

Please *do not* pay the charge notice.

Instead, contact Sarah at Creswell Crags via the contact page below, and she will liaise with the parking company on your behalf:

Please let us know as well, and we will do our best to assist in resolving the issue.

We'd love to hear your memories of WoW. Let us know in the comments your favourite meeting, a funny story or an enduring memory of our special group! 🥰

And just for fun, which three meetings from the last 12 months are represented in this image?

Our next meeting is on June 4th!
We are almost ready for our annual off-site trip, and this year we are heading just over the A60 to Creswell Crags, a prehistoric limestone gorge on the Derbyshire–Nottinghamshire border.

We will begin at the visitor centre with a potted history of Creswell Crags before splitting into smaller groups for a walking tour around the Crags, exploring its history, geology, and nature.

The event runs from 7.00pm, and we will meet in front of the visitor reception at 6.30pm. Parking is available in the Crags car park, although we would encourage car sharing or walking if you are local.

*THINGS TO KNOW*
🚗 Provide your car registration when securing your ticket.
🥤 Bring your own drink (refreshments won't be provided).
🥾 Dress appropriately for the outdoors.
❗️ If you are unable to join the walk due to restricted mobility, you are very welcome to attend the first part only.

The raffle prize for this meeting is a voucher for the Coloured Cob Equestrian Centre, next to the Crags. 🐎 They offer a range of activities, including riding lessons, trekking, and carriage rides.

Because selling raffle tickets on the night will be tricky, everyone who books a ticket for the evening will be automatically entered into the draw, which will take place at the end of the meeting.

We can't wait to see you there!

WoW crafters conjured up a coven of colourful 'lucky witches' with Tracey Colley from Twisted Spirit Creations earlier this month. Using ribbon, lace & string, & their trusty glue guns, the ladies produced a spellbinding collection - hopefully bringing them all many years of good luck. 🧙‍♀️🧙🧙‍♀️🧙

A big thank you to Dale for organising, while Lynn was sunning herself in Florida!

The next craft club meeting will be on June 18, where crafters will be knitting or sewing bears for the Christmas tree 🐻🎄🧶🧵🪡
