OWs Mark Alcroft (T 76 - 81), Nick Riley (Mg 76 - 81) and Peter Hanson (Pt 75 - 80) were among those at Lord's for last week's Test Match, watching fellow OW Joe Root (Pt 06 - 08) take to the crease for England.

A great day at the Home of Cricket and a chance to see one of Worksop's finest in action!

Following our recent tribute to Ricky Winn, we would like to share details of his memorial service and celebrate a life that touched so many within the Worksop College community.

All are welcome to attend a service of thanksgiving for Ricky's life at 12.30pm on Friday 3rd July at St Peter's Church, The Drive, Henleaze, Bristol, BS9 4LD. Ricky requested that those attending wear colourful clothes.

For those wishing to make a donation in Ricky's memory, his wishes were that contributions be made to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders UK) or Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Refreshments will be served in the church hall following the service.

Our thoughts continue to be with Ricky's family and all those who knew and loved him.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Stephen Hubbard to Worksop College to share part of his family’s connection with the school. Stephen’s great-uncle, Horace St Clair L’Amie, attended Worksop between 1911 and 1914 before going on to Sandhurst and serving with the Duke of Wellington’s West Yorkshire Regiment during the First World War.

Stephen brought with him a fascinating collection of school artefacts belonging to Horace, including the Duchess of Portland’s Medal for Classics (1914), a school production programme for A Midsummer Night’s Dream in which Horace performed, signed by fellow cast members, and other treasured items from his school days.

During Stephen’s visit, we uncovered something even more remarkable.

We discovered that the L’Amie Cup, still proudly awarded today for House Sport, was introduced following Horace’s death in 1920. At the time of the visit, we had not yet made this connection, but as we pieced together the story afterwards, we also found Horace’s shield recognising his representation of the school in running in 1915.

To realise that a tradition still thriving at Worksop today has such a personal and historic connection is incredibly special.

So, if you have ever competed for the L'Amie cup, now you know where it came from.

A pleasure to attend the annual Installation Dinner of the Old Worksopian Masonic Lodge and represent the school as they welcomed their new Worshipful Master, OW Philip Serth (SH 64 - 69).

We are incredibly grateful for the strong relationship we share with the Lodge and the continued support they show the school and wider community.

It was a lovely evening with excellent food, great company, and an opportunity to celebrate the year ahead. Managed to have a quick catch up with one of the lodge's longest serving members too, Pip Hayman (M 42- 49)!

Wishing Philip every success and enjoyment in his role as Worshipful Master over the coming year.

🎶 A truly memorable day of choral excellence in Oxford for our Worksop College singers, joining fellow Woodard School choirs from Ellesmere and King’s College Taunton at The Queen’s College, Oxford.

Under the direction of Professor Owen Rees, pupils rehearsed and performed alongside the renowned undergraduate choir for Choral Evensong as part of the prestigious Fettiplace Gaudy celebrations.

A lovely moment too for our Director of Music Tim Uglow, connecting with Old Worksopian and Director of Music at King’s College School, Taunton, Ben Sampler (T 91-96).

Just wanted to give a special mention and thank you to OW Malcolm Smith (SH 54 - 58), who has been volunteering his time once a month in the archives to support us as we continue getting everything sorted.

Malcolm has been such a huge help as we work our way through everything following our big move into our new space within the library. Support like this is truly invaluable and so appreciated.

I always love hearing Malcolm’s stories and memories from his school days, and on his latest visit he even brought along his old school house boater hat, as well as his much-loved tuck box!

Thank you, Malcolm, for your continued support and enthusiasm.

The OW Society is saddened to share the news of the death of Jeff Hurst (Shirley 1979–84), who passed away suddenly in March, just before his 60th birthday.

After Worksop, Jeff studied Computer Science at Brunel University, where he continued his love of music, playing the trumpet and cornet. He went on to work in IT, including time in Sweden with Ericsson, and more recently in the Thames Valley.

Jeff built a full and active life in Maidenhead with his wife Gayna and their son Nathan. He was a keen hockey player and also led a Cub Scout troop in the local community.

His memorial service at St Mary’s, Maidenhead was well attended, including several fellow Old Worksopians.

Our thoughts are with Gayna, Nathan, and all who knew him.

Words kindly provided by his friend, Martin Lunnon (Mg 79 – 84)
