Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Stephen Hubbard to Worksop College to share part of his family’s connection with the school. Stephen’s great-uncle, Horace St Clair L’Amie, attended Worksop between 1911 and 1914 before going on to Sandhurst and serving with the Duke of Wellington’s West Yorkshire Regiment during the First World War.
Stephen brought with him a fascinating collection of school artefacts belonging to Horace, including the Duchess of Portland’s Medal for Classics (1914), a school production programme for A Midsummer Night’s Dream in which Horace performed, signed by fellow cast members, and other treasured items from his school days.
During Stephen’s visit, we uncovered something even more remarkable.
We discovered that the L’Amie Cup, still proudly awarded today for House Sport, was introduced following Horace’s death in 1920. At the time of the visit, we had not yet made this connection, but as we pieced together the story afterwards, we also found Horace’s shield recognising his representation of the school in running in 1915.
To realise that a tradition still thriving at Worksop today has such a personal and historic connection is incredibly special.
So, if you have ever competed for the L'Amie cup, now you know where it came from.
