Plastic Free Halloween: How to make your own Spooky Sustainable Ghost Bunting

An investigation by Hubub in 2019 found the UK produces an estimated 2000 Tonnes of Plastic Waste every single year! So join me as we ditch the plastics and go foraging to make our own sustainable Halloween decorations.

A mammoth effort from the WEG Team this week as we returned to Lyppard Grange Nature Reserve to clear the other side of the Southern ditch all the way to the ponds! We have done this to improve access to the ditch and to start the process of rewetting. By removing the brambles, scrub and small trees overtaking the ditch we hope to allow for more seasonal wetness, which would help aquatic vegetation to establish. This would greatly improve the quality of the ditch as a dispersal site for the incredible Great Crested Newts.

We've even managed to make a lovely dead hedge out of the removed vegetation!

A soggy day won't stop our brave volunteers as we ventured out into a very rainy Aconbury Orchard. We worked on clearing and mulching the tree cages and successfully rescued 3 fruit trees from encroaching vegetation. We also got the tool kit out and scrap wood for some much needed tree cage repairs building a cage one for a lovely little tree without one. Hopefully we'll now see it growing straight and flourishing 🌳🌧

A gorgeous Wednesday well spent at Lyppard Grange Nature Reserve as we removed scub overtaking the hedgerow and cleared the surrounding ditch to remove any blockages. We also got stuck in removing blackthorn encroaching on the grassland, under the watchful supervision of our robin friend. We will be back this month on the 28th to continue removing scrub and to top vegetation around the pond, following guidance in the site management plan. Come and join!

Join us on Sunday 1st November, 10am-1pm, for a fun-gi time on a woodland foraging walk through Worcester Woods Country Park. We’ll be diving into the curious world of woodland fungi with local foraging expert, Annie Growing Wild Worcester.

Tickets are free and available on Eventbrite, with an option to donate (LINK IN BIO). All donations go directly back into the WEG, funding more educational wildlife events and biodiversity projects to improve Worcester’s Green Spaces. Anything you can donate is really appreciated 🙏

A slightly soggy morning well spent at Offerton Lane Nature Reserve clearing overgrown brambles. We do this to improve the accessiblity of the footpath and to keep the brambles from dominating the area. For Wetland habitats it is important to have a mosaic of different habitats with patches of open bank for amphibians and birds to access.

We came across a lovely Angle Shades Moth freshly emerged and pumping it's wings for the first time and rescued a delightful little oak tree from the encroaching brambles!

On Sunday 27th September 10am-12pm we are teaming up with the Friends of Diglis Fields and the Good Gym for a big community litter pick. Everyone is invited as we take a walk through the stunning Cherry Orchard Nature Reserve removing litter and chopping back some of the overgrown brambles 🌳🍒

This is a great opportunity for those who can’t normally make it to our volunteering sessions to get involved, and for anyone wanting to connect with the local community. Tools will be provided but I’d advise wearing long sleeves and long trousers. We are meeting on Diglis Playing Fields, I really hope to see you there!
