“It's a privilege to be involved in such an important part of someone's life."

For nearly four years, Katie has been providing compassionate care to patients and families as a Nurse on our Inpatient Unit (IPU).

"My favourite part is getting to know each patient" she explains. "Being able to build trust, listen to what matters to them and help make someone feel safe, comfortable and cared for is incredibly rewarding."

Throughout her time at Compton Care, Katie has witnessed many special moments shared between patients and their loved ones.

"There have been many memorable moments over the past few years such as weddings, blessings and parties for our patients and their loved ones," she says. "It is wonderful to be involved in these events, which give our patients a moment of joy during a very difficult time."

However, it is often the simplest moments that stay with her the longest. "I never take for granted the small things that can make a patient and their loved ones smile during such a challenging time."

Katie's reflections offer a reminder that hospice care is about much more than clinical support. It's about compassion, dignity, kindness and creating meaningful moments for patients and families when they need them most.

Katie shared her story as part of our Sponsor a Nurse Appeal, which is shining a spotlight on the difference our nurses make every day. To read Katie's full story and find out more, visit https://www.comptoncare.org.uk/a-day-in-the-life-of-katie-ipu-nurse/.

Hospice care doesn't need saving. It needs reimagining.

As demand for palliative and end of life care continues to grow, how can hospices adapt to meet the needs of future generations?

Compton Care CEO Rachel Overfield reflects on the challenges facing the hospice sector and why now is the time to think differently about how care is delivered.

She explores the need for greater collaboration, innovation and integration across health and care systems, and shares her perspective on how hospices can evolve to ensure more people receive compassionate, specialist support when and where they need it most.

Read the full article to discover why reimagining hospice care, rather than simply rescuing it, is essential for the future of palliative and end of life care.

We're proud to announce that Compton Care has joined forces with Dougie Mac, Katharine House Hospice, Stafford and St Giles Hospice in a groundbreaking partnership to transform specialist palliative and end of life care across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

Here at Compton, we've seen how innovative approaches such as our Virtual Ward, which has been running for over two years, can help people receive specialist support at home, often preventing unnecessary hospital admissions and enabling them to spend precious time where they most want to be. By combining our expertise, resources and experience, we are expanding the region’s Hospice Virtual Ward services, helping more people receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time

This pioneering collaboration represents a significant step forward, creating something bigger than any one organisation could achieve alone and ensuring more people can access the care and support they need, where and when it matters most.

Today is International Dog Day, say hello to our five gorgeous Pets as Therapy dogs who visit our Inpatient Unit each week. 🐾

Milo, Buzz, Buddy, Lola and Cherry bring warmth, comfort and companionship wherever they go, making a real difference to both our patients and their loved ones.

Whether they're enjoying a fuss from the comfort of a patient's bed or simply sitting quietly by their side, they're blissfully unaware of the extraordinary impact they have on helping people feel calm, relaxed and supported.

They instantly make each room feel like a home from home with their gentle approach and waggy tails.

As well as bringing smiles to faces, these special dogs can help boost confidence, reduce anxiety and support overall wellbeing.

Our team can also facilitate family members bringing in beloved pets to visit, providing patients with a much-loved piece of home and a comforting sense of normality, familiarity and emotional connection when they need it most.
