๐Ÿฉธ Extended Family Training Session โ€“ Supporting a Loved One with Sickle Cell ๐Ÿฉธ

Do you or your child have sickle cell?

Have your family members or friends ever asked:
"How can I help when they're in hospital?"
"What can I do to support a parent or carer?"
"What do I need to know when looking after a child with sickle cell?"

If so, this session is for them!

Our Extended Family Training Session is designed to help grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, family friends, and other loved ones better understand sickle cell and learn practical ways they can provide support.

We'll cover:
-What sickle cell is and how it impacts daily life
-How to support someone during a pain crisis or hospital admission
-Ways to help parents and carers
-Important things to know when caring for a child with sickle cell
-How small acts of support can make a big difference

The more informed our support networks are, the stronger and more supported our families become. โค๏ธ

Tag a family member or friend who would benefit from attending and help us build a community of understanding and support.

โ˜€๏ธ Hot weather can be challenging for people living with sickle cell โ€“ staying cool and hydrated isnโ€™t just about comfort, it can help reduce the risk of complications.

Top tips for staying well during warm weather:

๐Ÿ’ง Drink plenty of fluids
Dehydration can increase the risk of sickling and painful vaso-occlusive crises. Sip water regularly throughout the day, even if you donโ€™t feel thirsty.

๐Ÿ  Keep cool indoors
Close curtains during the hottest part of the day, and stay in shaded spaces where possible. Overheating can place additional stress on the body.

๐Ÿ‘• Wear loose, lightweight clothing
Breathable fabrics help regulate body temperature and prevent overheating.

โฐ Avoid prolonged time in direct sun
Try to limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours (usually 11amโ€“3pm).

๐Ÿฅ— Eat regular meals and hydrating foods
Fruits such as watermelon, oranges and cucumber can help support hydration.

๐Ÿ’Š Keep medications accessible and follow care plans
Speak with your healthcare team if you feel unwell, notice increased pain, fatigue, dizziness or signs of dehydration.

๐Ÿฉบ Listen to your body
Rest when needed. Heat can increase fatigue, which many people with sickle cell already experience.

Everyoneโ€™s experience with sickle cell is different. What helps one person may not help another, so knowing your triggers and early warning signs is important.

Please share your own tips below to help support others in the community ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ‘‡

A little bit of our day at The King's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace yesterday.

We are so grateful for our work to have been recognised and to have been awarded The King's Award for Voluntary Service.

A huge thank you to the 70 + volunteers we have that make everything we do possible. Without you we could not do what we do.

Thank you to everyone that believed in our mission to support families impacted by Sickle Cell and to advocate for a world that better understands the challenges they face. There is most certainly more to come over the next 14 years.

With love

We are so grateful for all of the support we have received to make our first ever adult, parent and carers respite break happen this year!

This is something we have wanted to do for a while and to have secured the funding and booked it was so exciting. We are taking 20 adults and parents/carers away for a 1 night hotel spa break in April.

The generosity of those that donated, raised money and sent us goodies to make everyone feel extra pampered has been incredible and we are truly grateful.

A huge thanknyou to for raising money at your event to make this dream come true and to and for these incredible products โค๏ธ

We do not want to spoil the surprises and will share more soon ๐Ÿฅฐ

A little throwback from when our founder was demonstrating how to use the YUYU Bottle Switzerland. Cianna found this way better than a traditional hot water bottle!

Not an ad, we genuinely loved this product!
