Mulberry Bush is a national charity that exists to serve people whose lives are profoundly impacted by emotional pain in order that they can thrive.

The Mulberry Bush is a not-for-profit charity consisting of The Mulberry Bush School, a non-maintained residential special school with a three-year programme which runs for 38-weeks a year, working with vulnerable and severely traumatised primary aged children and their families from across England and Wales, The Mulberry Bush Outreach, our outreach and training department and The International Centre for Therapeutic Care.

Last week, Dr Dave Roberts and Emma from our Training & Professional Development team attended The Children's Homes Association Conference, joining sector professionals to share ideas, reflect on practice and explore the future of residential childcare.

We were also proud to celebrate two award shortlists at the National Children's Homes Awards, recognising the dedication and relational work taking place across Mulberry Bush.

At Mulberry Bush Schools, every child is understood as an individual.

Our specialist therapeutic care and education brings together relationships, learning and therapeutic practice, with support shaped around each child’s experiences, needs and strengths.

For children whose early experiences have made it difficult to feel safe, trust others or manage overwhelming emotions, consistent and dependable relationships can help them feel understood and begin to develop new ways of relating to others.

A week on from the Oxford Half Marathon, and we're still reflecting on what an incredible day it was! 💙

From the runners taking on their own personal challenges to the crowds cheering them on, it was wonderful to see a whole community come together to support and encourage one another.

We believe that meaningful change begins with understanding, relationships and the individual. The atmosphere on Sunday was a reminder of just how important the support of others can be in helping us achieve things we might not have thought possible.

What happens when a child cannot say how they feel?

For some of the children we support at Mulberry Bush Schools, difficult early experiences can make it hard to understand, organise or express emotions through words.

Feelings may instead emerge through behaviour, play, or relationships.

For professionals working with children and young people, Drama Therapy can offer another way into understanding their experiences.

Through stories, characters, movement and imaginative play, children can explore experiences and emotions at a pace that feels manageable, without the pressure of having to find the words to explain it.

98% of students on our Foundation Degree in Therapeutic Work with Children and Young People
were satisfied with the teaching on their course.
