Remembrance Sunday

Please meet your leader by Langdale Hall at 10:15hrs and follow any instructions they have given you for your young person on OSM.

Young people need to be in uniform with their neckers ironed. School trousers or skirts or scout trousers if you have them and School shoes. (No jeans)

Please layer underneath their uniform, gloves can be worn. Standing around can become chilly.

If the weather looks wet please bring a foldable coat

Please ensure your child has had breakfast and a drink before attending, standing for an hour can cause young people to feel faint if they are not hydrated.

Thank you to Witney Town Council for the grant we received towards new kayaks for our young people to use. It was certainly a good summer for them!

On 11th October, a group of brave Scout leaders and dads will be running the Oxford Half Marathon. Not only will they be aiming to cover the 13.1 miles in respectable time, they will be running linked together as Father Christmas and his reindeer. Complete with costumes and sleighbells, they will be quite a sight as they run through the historic streets of Oxford. Andy, Langel Scouts leader, is raising money for Helen & Douglas House. Thank you to Thames Valley Police Mounted section for staying late to meet and show Marlborough Cubs what they do. It was lovely to meet the horses and spend time learning about their jobs. Lots of great questions tonight.

📣 AGM TONIGHT!

A quick reminder that the Witney Buttercross Scouts AGM is taking place tonight at the Scout Hut.

We’d love to see as many of our Scout families and supporters there as possible. It’s a great opportunity to hear about what’s been happening across the group and what we have planned for the year ahead. ⚜️

A little safety reminder for all our budding astronomers for the solar eclipse this week 🌒.

🌞 LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE? PROTECT YOUR EYES! 🌞

On Wednesday 12 August, observers across the UK will be treated to a partial solar eclipse. While the Moon will cover part of the Sun, it will NEVER be safe to look directly at the Sun from the UK.

⚠️ DO NOT look at the eclipse with your naked eyes. Because the Sun is never completely covered in the UK, even a quick glance can cause permanent and irreversible eye damage.

✅ Safe ways to enjoy the eclipse

🕶️ Use only certified eclipse glasses that comply with ISO 12312-2. Check they are in good condition before using them.

🌳 Watch nature's pinhole cameras. Look for crescent-shaped images of the Sun projected through gaps between leaves onto the ground.

🥣 Use a bowl or bucket of still water. You can safely observe the reflection of the eclipsed Sun on the water's surface. Never look directly at the Sun itself.

🍝 Use a kitchen colander. Hold it so sunlight passes through the holes onto a white sheet of paper or a light-coloured surface. Each hole projects a tiny image of the partially eclipsed Sun.

📦 Make a simple pinhole projector. A small hole in a piece of card projects the Sun's image onto another surface, allowing you to watch the Moon slowly move across the Sun.

🚫 Never use:
• Sunglasses
• Smoked glass
• CDs or DVDs
• X-ray film
• Camera filters
• Binoculars or telescopes without a proper front-mounted solar filter

🔭 Important: Looking through binoculars or a telescope without a certified solar filter fitted to the front of the instrument can cause instant blindness.

🌞 At Dark Sky Wales, we want everyone to enjoy this incredible celestial event safely. Whether you're watching from your garden, school or local park, remember:

👀 If you're in the UK, NEVER look directly at the Sun during the eclipse. Use safe viewing methods instead.

📣Please read - The Old Oak 📣

We have a fabulous new facility which has taken a lot of hard work from a volunteer team to purchase and make safe.
To make this happen we have had to put some basic rules in place to keep everyone but especially your young people safe and ensure minimal disruption to our neighbours. Please make sure you read and follow instructions from leaders when attending The Old Oak.

In line with our Scout risk assessments for all our activities it is absolutely key that parent and carers support our adult volunteers in keeping to these rules. Please remember they give up their own time so your young people can have fun and do that safely.

🔴Parents arriving in cars must drive down the driveway to the site to drop off.
🔴No Parking or dropping off in the allotment car park or on Park Road
🔴Car sharing must be actively encouraged
🐕Dogs are not allowed on site at any time - with the exception of registered assistance dogs.

Doing this means we can all enjoy this very special place for many generations to come.
