Cold Weather Night Shelter Supervisor – 6 Month Contract
Job Description
Alma Beacon (operating name for Windsor Christian Action) is a small not for profit charity which is responsible for three Projects:
• Windsor Homeless Project
• Windsor Street Angels
• Windsor Foodshare.
Our mission is to support homeless and vulnerable people to rebuild their lives. We provide practical and emotional support to alleviate ill health, disability, and financial hardship — at Alma Beacon, on the streets day and night, and through Foodshare.
A subproject of the Windsor Homeless Project is the Cold Weather Night Shelter (CWNS). The shelter provides a vital lifeline during the harshest months of the year, offering warmth, safety, food, and rest. Beyond meeting immediate needs, the CWNS fosters dignity, stability, and a sense of community. Our volunteers are central to this mission, creating a compassionate and respectful environment where every guest is valued.
The Role
We are seeking a Supervisor for the Cold Weather Night Shelter.
This is a fixed‑term role from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.
The role will report to the Manager of the Windsor Homeless Project
The successful candidate will be passionate, compassionate, and collaborative, someone who earns the respect of guests, volunteers, committee members, and donors. They will have a heart for vulnerable people and a commitment to making a positive, lasting impact.
The purpose is 2-fold:
• Working with the CWNS committee in the management of The CWNS and drive coordination with Windsor Homeless Project.
• Coordinate fundraising for the CWNS.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Coordination (with Windsor Homeless Project staff)
• Ensure we have sufficient beds, bedding and supplies
• Oversee the process of bedding Laundry
• Secure required food for evening meals and breakfasts
• Ensure Alma Beacon is cleaned and maintained to a high standard
Volunteer & Staffing Management (with the CWNS Committee)
• Recruit and onboard additional staff for night shifts
• Recruit, support, and retain volunteers
• Create and manage volunteer rotas
• Coordinate and deliver volunteer training
Fundraising & Community Engagement
Work with Trustees to raise awareness and help to secure the funds required to operate the shelter, engaging with:
• Private individuals
• Local churches
• Local charities
• Alma Beacon events
• Local businesses
• Volunteers.
General Responsibilities
• Lead on safeguarding during shelter operations and related activities
• De‑escalate challenging or chaotic situations to ensure the safety of guests, volunteers, and staff
• Handle difficult or sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy.
Requirements
Essential
• Experience managing dispersed or virtual teams
• Ability to build positive, collaborative relationships with colleagues, volunteers, donors, and partners
• Flexible, creative, and solution‑focused approach
• Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion
• Understanding of data protection requirements
• Knowledge of health and safety practices
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong team player.
• Ability to work in dispersed and virtual team.
Desirable
• Satisfactory enhanced DBS check (adults at risk)
• First Aid qualification
• Fundraising and/or sales experience
• Experience writing grant applications
• Understanding of mental health, personality disorders, and dual diagnosis
• Strong knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality
• Full driving licence.
Hours of Work
You are expected to work 30 hours per week with flexibility. During your contract the person will have 2 working patterns
• Shelter not operational the person will be expected to work in Alma Beacon between 10am to 3pm, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, with the remaining hours flexible.
• Shelter operational the person will be expected to work 3-night shifts per week 10.30pm to 7.00am with the remaining hours expected to work at Alma Beacon when the Windsor Homeless Project is open.
Salary
£24,000 pa. Paid monthly in arrears, on the last working day of the month, directly into a nominated bank account prorate. If the employee is requested to work additional hours, they will be paid £16.00 per hour.
Annual Leave
24 days paid annual leave (including bank holidays) pro-rata .
Review Clause
This job description may be reviewed and amended by agreement in line with organisational and service needs.
Notice Period
This role has a 14day notice period for the employee and the Charity
