How should we approach questions when there may be an apparent clash between faith and science?

Fr Robert Verrill OP here provides a helpful framework for this question at the beginning of his talk on reconciling the Catholic faith with the claims of evolution.

โœจ๐Ÿ™ A big thank you to everyone who joined us in Leicester on Saturday, and in particular to Fr Robert and Br Reginald for their input!

Fr Robert Verrill gave us a couple of fascinating talks, breaking down quite complex questions around the origin of the human soul, how Catholics should understand evolution, and what we are committed to believe regarding descent from an โ€˜historical Adamโ€™. In between, Br Reginald led a workshop looking at texts from St Paul and St Irenaeus on the relationship between Adam and Christ. All the talks were recorded and will be up on YouTube soon!

Given the sweltering heat thankfully we also had time for a walk and an ice-cream in the park! ๐Ÿฆโ˜€๏ธ

The final study day before the summer will be in London on Saturday 6th June, on the theology of beauty and the signs and symbols of our churches. Sign-up details and more info in our bio ๐Ÿ‘†

โœจโ›ช๏ธ A big thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday in London for our monthly Mass and social at the Rosary Shrine! ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŽ‰

It was a beautiful Mass, fittingly celebrated at the altar of St Joseph on his feast day, enriched by some Mozart from our schola ๐ŸŽถ, and a powerful homily from on the dignity of work.

The social after Mass featured some intense table tennis ๐Ÿ“ , which will now be a regular feature, not least for the prior Fr Matthew to demonstrate his skills!

๐Ÿ“† The next of these is the first Friday in June (5th June). Save the date!

How do we reconcile the claims of modern science with the teaching of the Catholic Church? Are human beings nothing more than products of an aimless evolutionary process?

Join us for a study day in Leicester led by Fr Robert Verrill OP on โ€˜theistic evolutionโ€™: how to make sense of modern scienceโ€™s theory of evolution in light of Catholic teaching on God, creation, and the human person. How do we explain the soul if the human body is merely a product of evolution? Is the Doctrine of Original Sin compatible with evolution, and was there any โ€˜evilโ€™ in the world before the fall?

The day will include talks, workshops, prayer, fellowship, and discussion, and lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend, but booking is essential.

Another full house at the Rosary Shrine! ๐Ÿ™Œ

We had a wonderful DYA study day on Saturday, with glorious weather, great questions, and plenty of ideas to ponder! โœจ

Fr Richard Ounsworth explored two big questions: can we read the Gospels as genuine history and testimony? And what would a historian actually make of the causes of Jesusโ€™ death? We also had a workshop looking at Dei Verbum on divine inspiration and Aquinas on the senses of scripture.

Recordings of the talks will be available on our YouTube soon โ€” stay tuned! ๐Ÿ‘†

We enjoyed a wonderful study day on Confession on Saturday in Leicester - a big thank you to all who came and those who helped out in various ways!

Fr Albert gave a great pair of talks, one on sin and human flourishing, the other on the sacrament of confession - theyโ€™ll be up on our YouTube soon. There was time for a walk after Mass and lunch to enjoy the sunshine โ˜€๏ธ, then a workshop with Fr Benedict on making a good confession. We finished with a time of adoration and the opportunity to go to confession for those who wished.

The next study day in Leicester will be on 23rd May, on Creation and Evolution, and there is also a study day in London on the historical Jesus on 18th April. Details in bio ๐Ÿ‘†!

What kind of history do the four Gospels provide? Are they reliable? What is the relationship between the 'historical Jesus' and the 'Christ of faith'?

Join us for a study day exploring the Gospels as literature, history and testimony. We will also look in more detail at the passion narrative: why did Jesus get crucified? What would a historian conclude about the causes and significance of Jesus's death? How might these historical conclusions challenge or confirm the Catholic faith?

The day will include talks, workshops, prayer, fellowship, and discussion, and lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend, but booking is essential.
