Wednesbury Fire Cadets Wednesbury Fire Cadets is a uniformed group based at Wednesbury Community Fire Station.

Our members are aged 11 to 16 and come from all over Wednesbury and the rest of Sandwell.

A great evening was had by all on Tuesday, as cadets took part in a range of practical activities on the drill yard. The new cohort of cadets continued to build on their learning by consolidating their skills in basic hose drills, as well as practising knots and lines.🪢 🧑‍🚒

Meanwhile, the rest of the cadet unit undertook a variety of hose and ladder drills, with some cadets reaching new heights as they successfully climbed in and out of the drill tower.🪜 💪🏻

Well done to everyone for their continued enthusiasm, effort, and commitment! 👏🏼

On Friday was the annual WMFS Fire Cadet Day 2026, where cadets from across the brigade came together to take part in a range of activities encouraging teamwork, communication and liaising with their peers from other cadet units 🚒💬.

A great day was had by all who attended!

A special shout out to Libby, one of our instructors, who took charge of the music 🎶 and had all the cadets and instructors dancing throughout the day! 🕺 💃

This year Wednesbury walked away with the shield as Cadet Day Overall Winners! 🏆🥳

Our cadets smashed some team-building last night, staying cool and working together whilst enjoying the sunshine ☀️😎💦

It’s tempting to cool off in open water — but hidden dangers can turn fun into tragedy! ⚠️

Key Points:
• Open water is never risk free. Even in hot weather, lakes, reservoirs, and rivers remain cold below the surface. Sudden cold water shock can overwhelm even strong swimmers.

• Hidden hazards are common. Underwater debris, steep drop offs, and strong currents cannot be seen.

• Heat increases fatigue. When people are hot, tired, or dehydrated, their ability to react in water emergencies is reduced.

• Drowning is silent. People in difficulty often cannot shout or wave — making prevention the most effective protection.

• Hydration and shade matter. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke can affect anyone.

DON’T TAKE THE RISK!

Instead:
• Seek shade and rest often.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Keep cool indoors or in safe, supervised areas.

Another Action-Packed Cadet Training Evening! 🧑‍🚒🪜💦🚒

Last night our cadets had a busy and productive evening, with our new cohort of cadets who got hands on learning how to ship a hydrant and carry out a hydrant flush ready for a drill.

Meanwhile, the rest of the cadet unit built on their knowledge, confidence and technique with their ladder drills, including having a climb into the drill tower.

Cadets also were presented with a bedroom fire scenario, giving them the opportunity to identify potential hazards, safety precautions, and discuss effective fire safety management, which allowed cadets to develop their awareness, critical thinking and decision making.

Fantastic effort from everyone involved — great to see skills, confidence, teamwork and leadership continuing to grow each week 👏🏼

An Evening of Drills, Teamwork and Growth 🧑‍🚒 📈 💪🏻

Yesterday evening, our cadets participated in drills involving ladders and hoses, coupled with a bit of healthy competition to strengthen and develop their skills and qualities of communication, teamwork, leadership and active listening!

The cadets had to identify targets around the yard and execute the appropriate hose drill to “reach and knock down” the targets. 💦 🎯

Our new cohort of fire cadets continued to build on our in-house new fire cadet programme and refine their drill yard skills they have learnt so far, with some input and mentoring from their more experienced peers.

Fantastic cooperation by all the fire cadets last night! 👏
