It’s October and the Christmas music is already out at Crofton Training Band! 🎄

We made a start on some festive favourites at Thursday’s rehearsal. It might seem a bit early to everyone else…but in the brass band world, Christmas is practically upon us! 😂

New funding alert! 🎉

Crofton Music Trust has been awarded funding through Prosper Wakefield Ltd!

This funding will help us continue running our 1.1 lessons, Brass Roots and Crofton Training Band, providing free opportunities for people of all ages to develop their playing and enjoy making music together.

As a growing charity, support like this makes such a difference. It helps us cover the costs of running our groups and continue making music education accessible to our local community.

We're really grateful to everyone involved for recognising and supporting the work we're doing! 🎶

Another busy Thursday at CMT 😊

A huge well done to Sammy, who has made the move from Brass Roots to Training Band, pictured here with his baritone!

We also had Rog stepping in to conduct while Dan was away, thank you Rog!

Just look at how full the rehearsal room is getting! It's lovely to see Training Band growing, with new faces joining us and our Brass Roots players making the move up.

Tonight’s Brass Roots looked a little more chaotic than usual but there was method in the madness! 🎨🎵We turned art into sound!

Kate took the group for a slightly different session this week, exploring free improvisation through art, using Hervé Tullet’s Museum in a Book, work by Kandinsky and other artists and graphic scores for inspiration.

Brass banding is quite structured, but taking away the music pads and stands gives players a chance to develop other parts of their musicianship. Free improvisation encourages them to really listen to each other, experiment with dynamics and different sounds. It asks players to make their own decisions about how something should be interpreted.

A very different Brass Roots rehearsal, and definitely something we’ll be exploring again!

Yesterday we welcomed even more of our Brass Roots players into Crofton Training Band!

Here are two of them trying out percussion on our brilliant new drum kit, donated by Rushden Windmill Band. 🥁

They weren’t the only ones making the move either, with a couple more of our Brass Roots players joining the cornet section too!

It’s always a lovely moment when we see players who started with us in Brass Roots ready to take that next step.

Here’s a wonderful little moment we captured recently, with one of our members having a go at conducting! 🎶

CMT isn’t just about learning to play an instrument. There’s other things happening along the way, from developing musicianship and listening skills to growing in confidence and trying something completely new.

And the best bit of all… making friends!

Winter is coming… although someone forgot to tell the bandroom last night! 🥵❄️😂

A few players are still away enjoying the summer holidays, so some of our Brass Roots members joined Crofton Training Band for a joint rehearsal.

It was their first time sitting in with Training Band, and they did brilliantly!

Here’s everyone having their very first go at Game of Thrones together.

First run through… we’ll have to come back to this one soon and see how it’s sounding! 🎶

Some good news for CMT! 🎉

We’ve received funding through Wakefield Council’s Neighbourhood Improvement Fund, which will help towards the costs of keeping our work running here in the local community.

We’re really grateful to our Ward 7 councillors and Neighbourhood Coordinators for supporting our application and the work we’re doing.
