Brief history of our name: The Luddites were a group of disenchanted men mainly based in the north of England. The men were pri
marily skilled craftsmen who had been, or were threatened to be ,made redundant as a result of mill owners installing Shearing Frames, which could do the work of 10 men. The resulting revolt became increasing violent until on 11th April 1812 a large body of men attacked Rawfields Mill in West Yorkshire, many Luddites become casualities, some wounded taken to Healds Hall ,where todays' Luddites meet-in more peaceful circumstances. There wounds were treated and then they were handed over to the authorities. In Jan 1813 17 of them were sentenced at Crown Court in York and hanged. To prevent further outbreaks 1000 troop were stationed in the area.So now you know !
